Joss Whedon Comic Book Day!

Three comics written by Joss out today. I totally overloaded on all the awesome. First up, Buffy #3:

Huh. Scott Allie wasn't kidding about a certain image being burned into the collective minds of the fans. That was certainly... interesting. But firstly...

Ethan! I wasn't expecting Joss to bring him back. It was a nice mislead though from the last issue. I totally assumed that the guy in the red shirt from Buffy's dream would be Spike, that it was Joss' sly way of working in the character even though he really can't use anyone from Angel. I assume the floaty guy whose feet we saw in issue one was also Ethan? We haven't seen Ethan since season four so I hope Joss or one of the other writers will explain what he's been up to. Clearly not bitter about being hauled away to Area 51 if he's helping Buffy. I also hope this means that Giles and Ethan will have some scenes together. It would definitely give Giles something to do and no one can get under Giles's skin like Ethan so some personal revelations might also occur.

Okay, now to the image that everyone will be talking about. I have no desire to analyze it too deeply. I just find it funny that in the background there are two trains heading into the same tunnel. Subtle. ;-) And I suppose that will be the extent of any appearance by Angel or Spike. One panel and no dialogue.

I can't help but think that maybe it was Willow who kissed Buffy. I'm thinking her or Xander. Xander seems like the obvious choice and with the way that one panel was focused on him, when Willow was telling everyone that someone in the room is in love with Buffy even if they don't realize it, it really seems like there's some awkwardness going on. Though it would be an interesting twist if it was Willow. Who was great to see, too. I love that one line about Kennedy. Oh, she died, but it was only for a month. So it seems like Kennedy is still in the picture but not really; Joss' way of keeping the fans happy? And skinned!Warren. I was sort of expecting him to be Amy's boyfriend. In the first issue Amy requested a weapons lab for her boyfriend and who else would have needed a weapons lab?

Some other notable things: Giles talking with the demons from the first issue. He looks a lot less old-manish here, thanks in part to the leather jacket he's wearing. Still doesn't explain what he's been up to, but it felt like he was playing negotiator. Dawn stomping on Amy was pretty awesome. It's good to see that she's not just sitting around the castle complaining. And more mysteries now with the triple Xs. I'm stumped on that one. No clue what it means.

I also picked up Astonishing X-Men #21 and Runaways #26. Jumping from one comic to the other, you still got the sense that Joss was writing the scripts but they still all fit within their respective universes. The tone and the humour just matched each one. Molly in Runaways is quickly becoming my favourite character.

I like reading comics, I just don't buy them a whole lot. I bought the Buffy comics the first time through and those are the main ones filling up a box I have. I only started to branch out because of Joss. :-D

I actually read stuff from both publishers and I really can't say that one is better than the other. They're just comics to me: great stories with pretty pictures.

I read stuff from both publisher as well as some of the indie ones. I guess what I meant is I lean towards DC titles. I am a huge fan of the Batverse and JLA stuff. The problem with Marvel is they have SO many titles for groups like Spiderman and the X-men and that kills me because I want to read them all can cant afford it money or time wise.

I have collect Fables and Y: The Last Man since they came out. They are Vertigo comics. I really just buy too much and have gotten SEVERELY behind in my reading that it frustrates me.

I think I am starting to grow up and do other things. Heh that statement is so full of irony and scaryness though.
