Well, Syfy has done something right. The entire Stargate Universe panel from Comic Con is now on-line. And you don't have to be in the US to be able to watch it!
I don't know why, but I kept expecting Brad Wright and Robert Cooper to be funnier. I think watching video of Joss all these years has spoiled me. Now I expect every producer/creator to be witty and informative at the same time. The cast was sort of meh, but this is their first con and they've only been filming for like six months, so they're still getting used to being a cast and stars of a successful franchise. I think if SGU comes back to Comic Con next year they'll be more relaxed. And there's been like no footage released, so it's hard for fans to ask interesting questions when they don't know what to ask about.
Just randomly some thoughts:
-Robert Carlyle is Scottish? To be fair, I've only seen him in two things: The World is Not Enough (and I barely remember that) and The Full Monty. In The Full Monty he was playing a Northern, so I just assumed that was his natural accent. I think his character on SGU is British, but he's got more refined accent, more south of Great Britain. Or so I assume. I haven't heard his character talk much.
-Stargate: not afraid to kill off doctors since 1997. One fan asked if they would be killing off more likable doctors and I like how Robert Cooper answered "We kill the doctor in the first episode!" And he wasn't kidding. But I get why they do. It's the Voyager scenario. You kill the skilled doctor right away so the inexperienced replacement is forced into the position without much warning. But Dr. Rush should watch out. His character might bite the dust later in the series' run. Maybe he should just drop the title of "Dr." to ensure some longevity. ;-)
-David Blue is a big geek and I like it. :-) He's already a fan of the show! They joked that when they hired him, they got an actor and a technical advisor.
I'm really looking forward to show now. It sounds like SGU will be more character driven and that's nice. I've never thought about it this way, but the other teams couldn't really squabble much because they had bigger issues to deal with, like aliens wanting to attack Earth. They didn't have time to be petty. The characters on the Destiny can. They weren't supposed to be there in the first place. I think it's the premise that's really making me excited. Stargate Atlantis started out with the notion of humans being stuck out in another galaxy with no way home but the show quickly abandoned the idea before they could use it properly. We never got to see the Atlantis expedition forming their own society in the city. Hopefully we'll see that aboard the Destiny. A little colony of humans on the frontier of space.
