So I’ve been steering clear of any spoilers for “The Day of the Doctor”. I haven’t watched any of the trailers or read any articles. Nothing. Nada. I was happy in my ignorance.
Then I watched “The Night of Doctor”. Damn you, Moffat!
But let’s start off with the good. Paul McGann! I never, ever, ever would have predicted that Eight would show up again. It makes sense, though. He’s the one we’ve seen the least, the one with the most gaps in his history, the one who deserves another canon outing. So it’s not weird that he would be the Doctor who becomes the Hurt!Doctor, or rather, the War Doctor as he’s called in the credits. Poor Eight, though. He wants to help, but he doesn’t want to fight a war. He literally has to become another man to face the horrors of the Time War.
But now we know who John Hurt’s Doctor is. He’s an in-between incarnation. He wasn’t “the Doctor” when he fought in the Time War, which explains Eleven’s line at the end of “The Name of the Doctor”. He was a warrior. I’m still confused as to why he’s around for the special, but all will be revealed on the 23rd. It’s interesting, though, that the War Doctor is young after the regeneration. The Time War must age him.
So is Eleven actually Twelve? The Karn priestess lady says Eight only has four minutes to live, so he was going to regenerate anyway. Leave it to Moffat to screw around with the numbering.
I still can’t believe they pulled this off. Maybe this means Eight will show up in “The Day of the Doctor”. Maybe other Doctors will show up! Anything is possible now!
Random thoughts: Eight costume looks different. The coat looks right, but is his shirt collar missing? I did watch this on my phone while at work so I only had a tiny screen (ETA: Okay, watched it again when I got home. It all looks the same, except he has boots instead of shoes and his cravat is tied loosely). Obviously time has passed since the TV movie so any changes make sense. The Doctor’s style does evolve, even during an incarnation. Mentions of Big Finish Companions! That means they’re canon now! No stepping inside of the TARDIS. I guess they couldn’t afford to have even a digital rendering of Eight’s interior. Sisterhood of Karn! I thought it was them when I first opened the video. They’re the preview image on the video. I haven’t looked at any promo photos so I was kind of confused as to why the War Doctor takes Cass’ bandolier but apparently it’s part of his costume. Huh. I had kind of hoped that when Eight regenerated we would see Nine, but alas, it’s not meant to be. But if Christopher Eccleston shows up in the special, I’m going to lose my mind.
So many questions now… This is why I try to avoid stuff. Sigh.
