locker_monsterOkay, so Canada gets to see new episodes of Stargate Atlantis before they air in the U.S. on Sci Fi. The season three finale just aired yesterday (Feb. 5) and some pretty cool stuff happened. Spoilers for the second half of season three (and slight spoilers for season four) behind the cut.
First off, Jewel showed up! It was all over the net that she would be appearing in half of season four and Firefly fans rejoiced. Everyone was wondering who she would play and it was Jewel herself who said she didn't find out until they handed her a stethoscope. But why hand her a stethoscope before the new season even began filming? Answer: she had two small scenes in the finale. So far, her character, Dr. Keller, isn't so sure about being the head of the medical department so I hope the writers play that out next season.
When the Atlantis Replicators were introduced as secondary villains, I was indifferent. Obviously you can't have the Wraith causing trouble all the time; you'd run out of storylines that way. But it's weird that the Wraith got the boot this season. The Replicators have shown up more times this season than the Wraith. However, the Replicators can do some sweet stuff that the Wraith can't. Like deploy a giant laser in space to attack the city's shield. And yeah, space laser sounds a little lame, but it gave the writers the excuse to both submerge the city and then fly the city off the planet. The cliffhanger was a little familiar, SG-1 has been lost in space before, but they were save in ships. I really am wondering how the writers will write themselves out of this.
The only thing that really bugged me was what they did, or are doing, with Elizabeth's character. Now, I like Elizabeth as a character. She a strong female leader with principles and her interaction with the various characters is always interesting to watch. But for some reason, this means the writers are scaling her back to recurring character status. My hope is they're only doing this because it's hard to write her into every episode since she is the base leader. Recent episodes had her just in the teaser or, as was the case with Submersion, she was dragged along for no apparent reason. That's the curse of being the base leader, I suppose. You can't follow the lead team everywhere.
But this isn't the thing that's bugging me the most. So in the finale this new jerk of a commander comes to the city with this plan to attack the Replicators. Sure, whatever, it's a fine plan, but the commander doesn't listen to Elizabeth's plea for a negotiation first. So while the commander is off doing his plan, we get a scene between Elizabeth and Teyla with Elizabeth talking about how the military never listens to her and doesn't respect her. The scene ends with Elizabeth saying she would resign if this keeps up. What? Where did this come from? Sure we've seen Elizabeth clash with military before but it never seemed enough for her to be considering resignation. I might have to watch the season over just to see where the hell this is coming from.
But this episode really felt like Elizabeth's last hurrah. Rodney says to her when they're sinking the city about coming full circle and at the end of the episode there's an explosion and Elizabeth is conveniently injured by it. Though, it is a nice change to see her in peril rather than John. John's always in trouble when the finale rolls around. I really hope Elizabeth isn't gone from most of season four because of an injury. Lame.
So, on the plus, cool cliffhanger. Impending death in space; you can't go wrong. Jewel! If she is going to be around for half of next season, I hope she comes to the forefront (especially if they're down a lead character). On the negative side, weird and out of the blue character development. I'm sure there's more I want to rant about, but it's not coming right now. I'll probably need a day or two to think and fume about this more.
