<----- The closest thing I have to a mummy icon.
So, "Mummy on the Orient Express". Gee, what could be in this episode and I wonder where it's set? ;-)
Yup, totally right about them editting the next time trailer so it seemed like Clara wouldn't be in the episode. Hell, she's not even billed in the Radio Times retro poster and she's not included in the main promo photo. But of course she's in the episode and of course she would decide to keep travelling with the Doctor. We still have four episodes to go, after all. But it just felt odd that she would go on one last trip with the Doctor. I thought she was really pissed off with him and wouldn't step foot in the TARDIS again. Also, I felt like the resolution was rushed and it came out of nowhere. The Doctor lied to Clara, yet again, and yet she's okay with everything by the end. I guess it just goes to show that Clara can't give up on the Doctor. It's an addiction, like she says, but I think a part of her would feel bad, too, leaving the Doctor on his own. And you know? This is just like any relationship/friendship. There will be ups and downs.
On the other hand, I almost feel like Clara shouldn't have been in the episode or only shown up at the end. I know it's been weeks since she last saw the Doctor, but for the audience, it would have shown us that she thought it over and her decision would have felt more natural. They could have done with an episode where the Doctor was moping on his own and he keeps getting advice about Clara from well-meaning passengers. That could have been the double bank episode. Anyway, it's just a personal preference in regards to storytelling. It still works in the end. You want Clara with the Doctor.
So is Danny fine with Clara travelling with the Doctor? He does say that "breaking up" with the Doctor is a bit harsh. So as long as the Doctor keeps Clara safe he's okay with it? You know how you could get around this Clara? Bring Danny along!
The rest of the plot wasn't bad. I actually enjoyed it. It's a contained episode, but it never felt slow. I suppose when you don't know anything about the episode going in you have low expectations. You can't go wrong with a murder mystery on the Orient Express. If it weren't for the fact that they were in space, this could have been a regular murder mystery on the old Orient Express, with the mummy being just a guy in a costume or something. The thing with Gus and some shady company wanting the Mummy's powers? Um, sure, why not. They could have gone with a straight up premise, with the Mummy being on board because it was being transported and it randomly starts killing people. Here, you have a ticking clock and every moment it gets worse because a lot of people are dying. But it's no surprise that the Doctor ends up seeing the Mummy and figuring it all out.
Random: Hasn't the actress who played the first mummy vicitim been on the show before? I think she was in "The Curse of Fenric". Twelve looked mighty fine out of his usual costume. Clara's dress wasn't bad, but her hair was weird. Obviously it was a wig; maybe that's why it didn't look right. Oh, but this totally means that the TARDIS had a machine on board that can style your hair, trim it, and/or grow it out again. Just look at Clara's hair in "Robot of Sherwood". Either that or there's a hall of wigs on the TARDIS. Before the Mummy started killing everyone, it was rather cute seeing Clara and the Doctor on a somewhat normal trip. If it hadn't been a "last hurrah" trip, it would have been even cuter. "Can I talk about the planets now?" Oh, Twelve, you're so awkward and it's adorable. And I just loved that moment when Clara says she's trapped the the Doctor immediately springs into action, no questions asked. He does care; he's just really rubbish at expressing himself properly. "Are you my mummy?" Of course they would slip that in. But there was absolutely no mention of Eleven, Amy, and Rory being on the Space Orient Express previously to deal with a Eygptian Goddess! Because Twelve clearly says that there's only one Orient Express in space so it has to be the same train. Jelly babies! Twelve seems to keep a cigarette case full of them. :-)
Next week looks like the double bank episode. The Doctor seems to be stuck in the TARDIS.
