I really like going into a Doctor Who episode not knowing anything. With the previous episode titles giving the plot away, it was nice being clueless. 42 is such an open title. Combine that with no preview trailer attached to the end of the previous episode and I was blissfully unaware. Staying spoiler free is worth it sometimes. :-D
I want to blab about how 42 seemed really similar to The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit but I'm sure everyone's made the various connections by now. The Doctor gets cut off from the TARDIS, the whole of the episode takes place in a claustrophobic setting, a human crew, and a creature with a malicious intent. Oh, and the Doctor in a space suit, probably the same one from TIP/TSP though the helmet looks like it was painted red. It feels like a recycle but I'm sure at some point in the old series each of these has happened to the Doctor so this isn't new or anything.
So did this episode really run in real time? There were obviously cuts between running from one place to another. I don't watch 24 so I'm not really sure how a real time episode works. Do they show the transitions between places? I did enjoy how simplistic things were. Getting through 30 doors will save your life. The monster is just a guy in a welding helmet and gloves. We're hurtling towards a sun! I like it when a plot isn't bogged down by unnecessary tech talk. And the fact that the sun was alive put a nice spin on the plot.
And I don't know why, but the crew sort of reminded me of the Serenity crew. Maybe it's because they're a cargo ship and the ship itself was rundown. Or maybe it's because they were just trying to make a living. There was even a few moments of silence as the escape pod started to drift away from the ship. You didn't have the Doctor's voice added over top because it's space. I really liked that; I'm the type of person who says, "How can you hear explosions in space when there's no air?"
I think Martha needs to have more scenes with her family. I like her more when she has to deal with her family. That's the part of her character that really shapes who she is. I've also realized that it puts her in a nice contrast to the Doctor, who has no one. I just still have issues with how she's presented. In the escape pod she's all weepy but at the end on the bridge she's shouting orders. It is because the Doctor told her to tell the others to vent the fuel?
Anyway, next week looks exciting. Seems like the Doctor can't remember who he is. And David looks so cute in those scholar robes. :-D
