Peter Capaldi is leaving Doctor Who :-(

I'm sure you've all seen the news. I had really hoped Peter would carry over once Moffat left, but alas, it's not in the cards.

I adore Twelve. I don't know what it is. At first, he was too brash for my liking, but he really grew on me as season eight went on. By season nine, he was this wonderfully grumpy man who could still dismiss you with a few words, but you never doubted his kindness and compassion, and my god, he looked great when rocking out with a guitar. I hope the guitar playing comes back for season ten. I also hope that season ten is a worthy exit for Twelve and for Peter Capaldi. If they're still filming episodes, hopefully they can cater some of the plot lines to wrap up any loose ends, rather than having all of the resolution in the Christmas special.

I guess the BBC got its wish. The rumour was that they wanted a new Doctor for when Chibnall takes over. Does this mean that Bill and Nardole are only around for one season? Kind of sucky if that turns out to be the case. I mean, I know change is a part of the show's DNA, but you don't always have to do a clean slate.

And now the speculation begins about who will play the next Doctor...

It's pretty common for the companion to carry over when the Doctor changes as a way to help viewers connect with the new Doctor. See: Second Doctor (Ben and Polly), Fourth Doctor (Sarah), Fifth Doctor (Tegan, Nyssa, and Adric), Sixth Doctor (Peri), Seventh Doctor (Mel), Tenth Doctor (Rose), Twelfth Doctor (Clara).

I'm not sorry to see Capaldi go -- I've never really warmed to him. Looking forward to seeing who we get next!

Who knows if Bill will get a second season. It was just part of the rumours floating around that Pearl Mackie was only contracted for one season. The BBC might decide to keep Bill once the new season starts airing and the fans start to make their opinions known. We shall see...

I do prefer it when a Companion carries over. You don't have to introduce two new characters at once and devote precious story time setting up their backstory and their personalities.

That's the nice thing about Doctor Who, isn't it? You're not going to love every Doctor, but you have the chance to like the next incarnation. I hate change so it's weird that I adore a show that embraces a huge change every few years.
