I can't believe how far LoT has come since its first season. My god, the show was so dire and boring back then. I'm glad the writers and the producers decided to embrace the kind of wackiness that would have been right at home in the Silver Age of comic books.
I thought the show couldn't top the craziness from last week - which included some clever meta with John Noble and Gorilla Grodd attacking a young Obama - but damn it, they did. Guys, the Legends created a giant Beebo and used him to defeat an ancient time demon. You're not going to see that on any other DC show, let alone any other superhero show. I wonder if the other DC-CW shows look at LoT and are slightly envious that they're having so much fun.
This could have been a rough season. You had a lot of cast changes, the return of Damien Darkh yet again, and a whole lot of MacGuffins in the form of the Zambesi totems. The writers made it work, though, and they even tied a lot of the various threads from the season together, too. I don't know if that had been the plan all along, but it was fun seeing characters from earlier in the season come back. Wonder Woman-esque Helen of Troy? Awesome! It was probably also done to save on the CGI budget, too, since you can't have the team fighting Mallus for the entire episode, so here are some humans in costume to push along the plot until the big battle. Man, if DC doesn't make some Beebo dolls after this, then there's something wrong with their marketing department.
I was actually surprised that the Damien Darkh redux worked. This was his third time being the bad guy for a season. He was quippy when we met him on Arrow, but he was never fun until he got to LoT. I think that's what saved him as a villain. And he had a meaningful arc this time around, too. All of his villainy was always done for his family, so it was nice to see a natural extension of that. Since Damien is dead (one assumes), it would be nice if Nora popped up once and again just to keep the Darkh family presence going. Actually, I would like to see her again. Will she turn over a new leaf? She and Ray were connecting so they could follow up on that (and it won't be hard to convince Courtney Ford to come back since she's married to Brandon Routh).
Oh, and the team might need more occult help now that they'll be fighting demons and whatnot next season. Oh my god, Constantine is going to be a regular next season! Redemption! Take that, NBC! I'm not sure how Constantine is going to fit in, but I'm sure it's going to be fun. I read that Ava will also be a regular next season. Does that mean she leaves the Time Bureau? But she's in charge. On the other hand, she and Sara are dating, so maybe she will quit? Whatever ends up happening, it will change the current team dynamic, which should be interesting.
Speaking of the team, I'm glad they introduced Zari and added Wally. Zari was completely new and unrelated to any of the established characters in the DC-CW verse, so she came in with no baggage from the other shows. She also seems to be the new mechanic on the Waverider, having taking over the role from Jax. If the show could use her hacker skills some more, that would be great, but I don't see her computer skills being an asset against demons. And Wally. The Flash failed you as a character, but I'm glad the producers realized he would be a great fit on LoT. He's part of a team now that actually respects him and wants his help and man, he is so happy to have friends who respect him in return. It's kind of funny how LoT has become the final destination for characters who deserve more screen time and/or a second chance.
The things I didn't like about the season were few and far between. LoT still struggles to find the right balance for the team. You still get episodes when a character is left back on the Waverider for no good reason. I'm sure this will continue to happen since it is a large cast, but it's still vaguely annoying when not all of the team is put to good use. The whole thing with Amaya and Nate was sort of all over the place. First, they were together, then they weren't together, then they were friends, and then they were back together, and now they're apart again. Ugh. This is why I'm not fond of romance. Yes, perfect relationships are boring to watch, but it's also boring to watch the constant back and forth. I had hoped that Amaya was returning to 1942 for good, but I read she's still a regular for next season, so who knows what's going on. My god, her timeline is so messed up. Also, it was really selfish of her to change time. I know she wanted to save her village and redeem Kuasa, but damn it, you do not break time. It's the one thing the Legends should understand by now. I suppose it all worked out in the end, but Mari and Kuasa's history is all altered now.
And they killed off Rip. Poor guy. He was a wet blanket in season one, missing/an amnesiac/brainwashed for most of season two, and an all around jerk this season. The writers never gave him an opportunity to become a better character. He just continued to make a lot of questionable decisions. Like, Ava is a clone and it turns out that Rip just grabs a new one whenever the old Ava dies. God, that is a dick move. I guess I should be glad that the writers kept Rip around for as long as they did. They easily could have written him out at the beginning of season two. The producers must like Arthur Darvill. You could argue that Rip didn't die. Gideon said there was an very, very small chance he could survive the explosion of the Time Drive, so I like to believe that Rip was thrown through time or something. If there's no body, then the character isn't dead. That's the rule of comic books. Seriously, though, I would like to see Rip again. Maybe he's trapped in a Hell dimension and the team rando stumble across him.
Random: The show visited future Vancouver! For once, Vancouver got to play itself. For the curious, the AVA building is actually the science centre. Nice to see Jax again. So the Jax we meet is from 2023 if it's been five years for him since he last saw the team? And he named his daughter after Martin. Aww.... The whole Voltron-Ghostbuster thing with Beebo was just amazing. I mean, how can you not think about Beebo? He's so cute and cuddly. And he looked incredible during the big fight scene. I know it was all CGI, but just look at his fur! That was money well spent. I can forgive all of the cost saving measures they had during the season. The poor actress playing Helen; she must have been freezing when they were filming the outdoor scenes. God, Vancouver was snowy again this year. "Worst orgy ever." Just loved the team hug at the end where Mick pushes everyone away. I still don't get why the Legends kept running into family. Was it Mallus trying to manipulate time? Or some other force at work? And oh my god, "Mallus" versus "Malice". Mallus was so miffed that no one got his name right.
I'm not overly familiar with the mystic side of things in the DCverse. I know there are characters like Etrigan, and Deadman, and Doctor Fate, and Swamp Thing. They had Doctor Fate's helmet on Constantine so it'd be nice to have the character show up. Ooh, they could introduce Zatanna. Or is she tied up with the Batman mythos? Ooh, they could also grab adversaries from Diana's rogues gallery. Great way to have Helen come back. Maybe she can mention how she's friends with the Themyscira's queen's daughter...
There's no way the other DC-CW shows can top this finale. They're all just aiming for second best finale at this point. :-D
