I finally managed to find a copy of issue one of the new Doctor Who comic. The story was okay. It was only the first issue so I'll have to see how the rest of it pans out and whether Doctor Who can make the jump from screen to page as well as other television adaptations.

I usually don't complain about a comic's art, but here I found it a bit weird. It shouldn't matter too much whether the art resembles the actors, but the Doctor and Martha look a little too cartoony. Plus, I don't think the Doctor's nose is that big. ;-)

The artist did capture some of Ten's mannerisms. Look, awkward head scratching.
Anyway, the plot has the Doctor and Martha on the quest for the perfect chocolate milk shake. Seems Martha is a bit of a chocoholic.

I'm just amused by some of the imagery here. The Doctor is all geeky and cute in the first panel and he's wearing red shorts with his blue suit jacket in the second one. Red shorts? Well, at least it matches his tie. :-) I prefer the blue suit just on its own with a white shirt. Mix it with other colours and it becomes hard to look at.

The one thing a comic does allow is funny framing, like this. It's so Ten.
So the glowing red eyes behind Martha there belong to a Sycorax. They've been pulling a "Most Dangerous Game" with the last living members of nearly extinct species. Naturally, the Sycorax meets the Doctor and wants to use him in one of his hunts. And naturally, the Doctor doesn't agree with what's going on and foils the Sycorax's plan.

Sonic screwdriver pwns Sycorax sword!
The issue ends on a "to be continued". It kind of reminds me of classic Doctor Who, with its serial format. Old episodes would lead right into the next one.

It's not canon, but still, a good effort. I hope it picks up as the issues go along.

Or this one? This one's pretty bad. There's no way the Doctor's hand should be that big. The Doctor's feet are also out of proportion with the rest of his body in some panels. I'm not familiar with the artist so it could be purely a stylist choice. It kind of reminds me of anime; characters are usually over exaggerated.
I forgot about that episode. I love how casual One is when he tells his companions. "Yeah, I made some hot cocoa and got engaged." You have to wonder if Ten makes that same mistake, considering that Aztec warrior looks like he's about to attack them. ;-)

Date: 2008-03-03 02:09 am (UTC)I think it is a stylistic choice. My parents sent me an article about this comic, and the artist talked about how he was 'animation' influenced. Now, I watch *a lot* of animation, and that's not an usual stylistic choice.
It is possible to exaggerate characters without making them unappealing. Those hands make ten, TEN! just that.
Maybe the Aztec warrior had his sights set on Martha. Or the Doctor, if those abnormally large hands hadn't put him off. Though you know what they say about a guy with big feet...
He has big shoes. XD
