This is so weird. Being Human UK and Being Human US are both airing now. Coincidence or brilliant marketing?

I watched the US version of Being Human last week, figuring I would give it a shot because it's shot in Canada (Montreal to be precise). I don't know, it's hard to judge the show from just one episode. All the elements are there, but it's just not the same. I think it's because the three main characters aren't a unit yet. Being Human UK sort of showed Mitchell and George moving in with Annie but by the time the intro was done, they were three, loving flatmates who got along wonderfully. The US versions? Not so much yet. Maybe once the three characters gel, the show will get better. Right now, I'm just not feeling it, and that's the whole point of the show. It's these three people - a vampire, a werewolf, and a ghost - sharing a house and trying to live somewhat normal lives. It doesn't work all the time but they have each other.

I don't see why we need an American version of the show. What new spin can you put on it by setting it in Boston instead of Bristol?

Vague spoilers for Being Human US 1x01 )

I think I'll keep watching Being Human US just to support the Canadian aspect of it. I'm hopeful the show will grow on me.

Now, Being Human UK. The original and still the best. After last season, I really hope the show gets back to its roots, i.e.: the main characters. Last year they drifted apart and the show was very grim. And now they live in Wales! Barry Island, I think, is what Mitchell said. But I'm finding it very distracting. I keep seeing locations Doctor Who has used and actors who have appeared on Doctor Who. My thoughts were pretty much, "Look, it's Leadworth Hospital, look, it's Rhys, look, it's Gwen's police station; where's PC Andy?" I keep expecting a crossover, but I know I won't get one.

Maybe this a good sign, but Toby Whithouse is listed as a producer on the American Being Human, so maybe he'll steer the show right. Let's hope this doesn't turn into another US Life on Mars.

So Being Human just finished and Doctor Who is back in a month. What am I going to watch in the mean time? I was kind of hoping Ashes to Ashes would be back soon, but all I can find for a premiere is "Spring 2010". Come on, BBC, give me date. Or are you going to make me watch Doctor Who and Ashes to Ashes at the same time? *locker_monster's head explodes at the thought of all the time bending awesome*

Some Being Human thoughts in the meantime...

I suppose with the Olympics over, it's back to watching North American television. I can't remember where I left off with some of my shows though...

So I've been told I'm gainfully employed until April with this stupid project. And I was so looking forward to breaking away. Okay, yay, three more months with a pay cheque, but I just hate how these people can't make up their minds. I mean, our department is down to five people. Keeping three of us around for a little longer isn't going to make a difference.

Sigh. And I moved offices again, so now I don't have the convenience of writing at work, which so helped to pass the time. Now I actually have to work all the time and my gosh it's boring.

But there are some things to look forward to in April. I'm heading back to Vancouver to attend that Stargate con. Yes, I was just there last year, but my mom and I couldn't help ourselves. And David Hewlett will be there! I'm debating whether I want to buy a photo-op or not. It's $50, which is a lot when you think about it. $50 to get your picture taken with someone, albeit, someone awesome. And the geekiness continues the week I get back from Vancouver. The local con just announced Leonard Nimoy is coming, which is a huge deal. Plus, he's heading down to Vulcan the day before the con, because hey, it's Vulcan. I do hope the con realizes they are going to need a huge room for Nimoy's panel. If they try to stuff everyone into one of the smaller rooms, it'll be lame and a fire hazard.

And I caught up with Being Human. I'm not sure I'm liking how this season is going so far.

Spoilers for Being Human 2x02 )

I've also started watching MacGyver, thanks to my public library and their DVD collection. Hee, the 80s.
So I've started watching Being Human, just as a change of pace from Time Lords, and I really wish I had started watching sooner. It's a really good show once you get past the initial concept of a vampire, a werewolf, and a ghost sharing a flat together. Not that the concept itself is lame. The supernatural aspect is a lovely metaphor, but when you sum up the show like that, it sounds like a cheesy comedy for some reason or that the show is trying to bank on the popularity of Twilight.

Being Human obviously reminds me of Buffy and I think that's why I'm enjoying it. The show is all about its characters and telling engaging stories, not glorifying the supernatural as something awesome. Being dead, or undead, or an animal once month comes with its share of problems and these people don't just shrug them off. They deal and they struggle.

And I just love the friendship between George, Mitchell, and Annie. For whatever reason, I wasn't expecting the three of them to be good friends, but that was just another misconception about the show on my part. The show could have gone the typical route and have them not getting along, but they all look out for each other. I just finished the second episode, so maybe this has been shown, but I would love to see how George and Mitchell met and how they became friends. I doubt it was as simple as "I'm a vampire! I'm a werewolf! Let's share a flat together!"

I also enjoy the world the writers have built. There are rules to being a vampire, a werewolf, and a ghost. Though, I'm not sure I agree with Mitchell being able to go out in sunlight. In one episode George says Mitchell has problems going out in sunlight, yet a few scenes later, we see Mitchell outside in broad daylight wearing sunglasses. But I guess it's just easier this way. Same with George's werewolf form. It's so cheesy but coming up with a decent suit or elaborate special effects would cost money. It reminds me of the first time we saw Oz as a werewolf on Buffy. I just want to pet George when he's a werewolf, but then I would probably get ripped to shreds. And it's kind of refreshing, just having a vampire or a werewolf with no special destiny. Mitchell and George are just average guys working as porters.

I'm not sure I get why Syfy is making an American version though. Just import the UK version, people. Americanizing British shows never ends well.
