Doctor Who fic: Four Times Rory Williams Died and One Time He Didn't (1/1)
Title: Four Times Rory Williams Died and One Time He Didn't (1/1).
Rating: PG
Characters/Pairings: Rory, Amy/Rory
Timeline: set pre and during "A Good Man Goes to War"; spoilers for "Amy's Choice", "Cold Blood", "The Curse of the Black Spot", and "A Good Man Goes to War".
Summary: The literal and metaphorical deaths of Rory Williams.
Disclaimer: Doctor Who, in all its brilliance, belongs to the BBC.
A/N: The title pretty much says it all.
The first time he dies, it's in a dream. Rory really doesn't remember that one. One second he's staring out the bedroom window and then the next he's waking up, chilled to the bone, inside the TARDIS.
It's not a real death, but Amy's reaction is genuine. She hugs him, clings to him, as though she's afraid that he might fade away. Rory promises himself that he'll never put Amy through that again.
He breaks his promise.
The second time he dies it's for real. There are caves and lasers guns and lizard people and it couldn't be more surreal. Rory doesn't think, he just acts. He pushes the Doctor out of the way but he gives no thought to his own safety. It's brave and stupid all at the same time.
It's not an instant death. Rory can still form thoughts as his body slowly grows numb. Amy's hovers over him, tears in her eyes. All he can think is, "I'm sorry" and the words tumble from his lips.
Technically, this death never happened either, thanks to a crack in space and time, but Rory remembers. He tries not to think about it.
The third time he dies… Rory can't believe he's up to his third death.
This one's strictly accidental. The boom aboard the Fancy hits him full in the chest and knocks him into the ocean. The storm rages above him, but he sinks peacefully beneath the waves. He wants to claw his way back to the surface but he's suddenly so tired.
It's the Siren who saves him but it's Amy who brings him back.
The fourth time he dies it's because he needs to.
Amy is gone, kidnapped without him knowing, and their child is in the hands of villains. He will stop at nothing to get her back. He's ready to go to war.
But not as Rory Williams. He has to be a soldier, a warrior, and Rory Williams is neither of those things. Rory Williams is kind and he can't afford to be kind right now. Amy's captors have no honour; they don't deserve mercy.
The Lone Centurion goes to war. He doesn't know if Rory will come back from this death.
The Lone Centurion finds her getting ready to flee in her ship. Eye Patch Lady. Madame Kovarian. She's alone.
And she has his child.
His sword is already drawn. He's silent as a shadow as he comes up behind her and holds the tip of his sword to her throat. It takes all of his effort not to twitch, not to slice the blade across her skin and watch the blood well up.
She's speaking to him. Even in defeat Kovarian remains cool and threatening. He doesn't hear a word. A quick jab is all that it would take to end her life.
Captain Avery and his son Toby appear before the Lone Centurion can act. Kovarian regards him with her solitary eye and a mocking smile lurks there. She doesn't fight back as she's led away.
He sheathes his sword and turns to the real reason he's here. The white carrying case looks more suited to house a saxophone rather than a child. He kneels down, an uncomfortable feat in his armour, and he pulls open the segments keeping the lid shut.
He sees his baby for the first time.
Swaddled in white cloth and squirming to break free, his child is so small, but so precious. Something stirs inside of him, amongst the cold corners of his soldier's heart. Carefully lifting the child free of the case he cradles him (her?) close to his chest. The battle is done but there's one last task to do.
He finds Amy in a stark white room, as fierce as ever. A month of warfare has led him here and his emotions swell.
His wife is safe.
He has a daughter.
He holds their child and Amy lays a gentle kiss on her forehead. They're together for the first time, the three of them. A family.
Somewhere inside of him a wall breaks down and the tears come soon after. It's Amy who brings him back again, her and their little Melody. The Lone Centurion fades away.
And Rory Williams returns to life for the fourth time.

I really liked this story, short and sweet, especially the bit above. Although I liked A Good Man... I did feel that by time-jumping, Moffat did Rory's character a bit of a diservice, as this was a really opportunity to see him interact with Doctor one-on-one in a crisis and your fic fills in the gap a bit :)
