For decades Rory had toyed with the idea of visiting Leadworth, but he had never found the time. Work kept him busy and he also didn't have access to a car. It was just a thought that he kept on the mental back burner; something to revisit once every few years. But then he had noticed the date the other day and it was a notion he couldn't put off any longer. )

For over fifteen hundred years he had protected the Pandorica, from raids and wars and through perilous journeys. He had been buried alive and drowned and stabbed and shot. And it was all for Amy. Amy Pond from Leadworth. His girlfriend, his fiancĂ©e. The only woman in the world that mattered to him. The woman he loved. )

Maybe it was because of his injuries - he had never been this badly hurt before - but as Rory slipped away he felt something inside him take over. A trace of his Auton conditioning, maybe, his default setting. His right hand snapped in half, exposing the gun hidden inside. )

More gunfire sounded, the familiar rat-tat-tat causing Rory to grind his teeth. He heard someone cry out and he quickly looked left and right. A few steps ahead he spotted a soldier sprawled atop a muddy snow bank. He crossed the distance with a few long strides, only slipping once on the packed snow. He started to ask if the man was all right, but he quickly saw that there was no point. A stray bullet had gone right through the man's heart. )

"So you're going to change history? Can you do that?" Rory thought of the Doctor's parting advice before he hopped into the future. He hadn't done well in the "staying out of trouble" department, but causing trouble was completely different. He had let history run its course, more or less, even when it could have used some changing. )

His last memory of Restec, near death but with revenge still blazing in her icy blue gaze, swam before Rory's eyes. He tried to block it out, but the memory played on. Restec with her gun, the Doctor in her sights. Him shouting the Doctor's name and pushing the Time Lord out of the way. The red blast from the gun that ended it all. )

Could he tell Harkness everything? About Amy, and the Doctor, and the real reason they were no stars in the sky? He'd understand the mechanics of it all, no doubt, but did he have to know? Maybe Captain Jack Harkness better off thinking the same, old tired myths about the Pandorica and its protector. )

Amy. Without a doubt, Rory would have done anything to see her that very second. He hadn't admitted it at the time, when Harkness had given him the assignment, but he had selfish reasons for coming here. A working time machine. How could he resist, even if it was just a possibility? )

It was the best Rory could offer. Yes, it was a ploy to get home, but if the Crown wanted to prove what was important to them, then they would have to act. They couldn't grant the colonies their independence and leave the Pandorica behind. The box they thought they had controlled for the past century would be lost to the former colony and that was not something that could be condoned. )

Rory gripped the armrests of his chair, causing the wood to creak. Nearly a century of waiting, of being separated from the Pandorica and Amy, and all because the Monarch didn't want the Pandorica in England. It was nice and safe in the colony where everyone was polite and no one rebelled. )

Rory had only seen this once before, and it hadn't been as spectacular then. The light was coming from the Pandorica. The complex lines within the circles rotated and moved, uncoiling like parts in a lock. The box was opening. )

He was on his feet in an instant, his hand already on the hilt of his sword. It was instinct, drilled into him through the countless centuries. He had to be ready all the time; enemies could be anywhere. Perhaps it was bordering on paranoia, but Rory was over 1600 years old. He had seen too much to be naive anymore. )
