TV round-up for the year
With most TV shows done for the winter, I just wanted to get some thoughts down.
- Castle: Man, I'm ready to give up on this show. It feels like ABC is pretty much done with it, too; the show had a weird schedule during sweeps. And really? They broke up Castle and Beckett for the first half of the season? After spending how many years getting them together? At least they're back together now, but it felt like needless drama. I'm fairly confident that ABC is not going to renew Castle for another season.
- Supergirl: Like The Flash last year, this show has potential, but it hasn't hit its stride yet. I'm sure the second half of the season will yield more consistently good episodes; it just takes time. I am glad that Cat Grant figured out that Kara is Supergirl. I don't think Perry White ever managed to figure out that Clark Kent is Superman. Now Kara doesn't have to come up with lame reasons for why she wasn't around. Though, I wonder if Cat will try to take advantage of her new found knowledge. And they introduced J'onn J'onzz aka Martian Manhunter! This isn't J'onn's first outing on a live action TV show (that honour goes to that horrible Justice League pilot that never got picked up), but technology has finally reached a point where they can do convincing CGI Martian with green skin and a funny shaped head. I didn't expect to see J'onn on Supergirl, I totally thought Hank Henshaw was a cyborg, so this was a nice surprise. Will Kara found out that Hank is J'onn? I hope so. It'd be fun to see the two of them battling bad guys together.
Now that Supergirl has been picked up for a full season, I hope CBS relaxes its stance on crossovers with the Arrowverse. I would love to see Kara teaming up with Barry or Ollie. Actually, Kara and Barry working together would be awesome. They're both so cute and dorky; their conversations would ramble on and on.
- The Flash: Speaking of Barry and Kara... They could totally introduce Kara by saying she's from an alternative Earth, easily tying it in with the arc of the season. There are 52 breaches after all. That's a lot of different Earths to explore. I like that they decided to cover the DC Multiverse this season. After doing time travel last season, alternative Earths is the next logical step, plus it's a big part of Barry's comic background. He was the first one to discover Earth-2. I also love that they paid homage to that iconic cover. Yes, it was a cheesy moment and it was blocked kind of weird, but it was fun.
Yet again, The Flash portion of the crossover was better than the Arrow portion. I think it's because The Flash writers are used to having levity in their scripts, so they throw in more jokes and more lighthearted moments. I doubt we would have seen the magnetic arrow that Felicity made for Ollie on Arrow. I also appreciate that it wasn't just an episode of The Flash with a few of the Arrow characters roaming around in the background. It felt like a proper team-up episode with both casts each getting a decent amount of screen time. As for the Arrow portion, well, I'll get to that in a sec...
- Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: I think this show has finally hit its stride. Before, it seemed like the show was just plodding along and it was only there to tie the Marvel Cinematic Universe together. Now, these characters feel fleshed out and they have their own corner of the universe to play in. At the same time, I'm not sure what to make of this Inhuman plotline. They wove it together with the HYDRA plotline, so it may be cool or it may crash and burn. I really hope all of this set-up pays off for when they have the Inhuman movie.
And yup, this is a Joss Whedon show. I totally did not expect them to kill off Roslind. I should know better by now. The second a character is in a happy relationship, of course one of them is going to die. Please don't do mean things to FitzSimmons. They're so cute together. I was also surprised that they had Coulson kill Ward. Well, it was a long time coming and I don't feel bad that Ward is dead. He's not really gone anyway. Now he's some Inhuman zombie. It's like he has a Goa'uld in his head. ;-)
- iZombie: Yet another show where no one can be in a happy relationship. Or maybe just happy in general. Wow, the winter finale was a bummer. Liv and Major broke up, Liv got booted from doing detective work, and turns out that the zombie cure isn't permanent. Liv and Major's relationship was going to blow up anyway, once she found out that he's been working as a zombie hunter for Max Rager. I still think Liv needs to tell Clive about zombies. If the guy can believe that she has psychic visions, then it's not a far leap for him to accept that there are zombies in the world.
Oh, and in one episode they made reference to Hearst College, the university Veronica Mars attended. This totally means both shows are set in the same universe! Veronica Mars/iZombie crossover please. :-) Liv could help Veronica on one of her P.I. cases. If Arrow can bring back a character from a cancelled TV show that aired on a different network, then it wouldn't be so far fetched for iZombie to bring back a character from a cancelled TV show that aired on the same network.
- Arrow: This season is much better than last season. It has more focus than last season, which always helps. The addition of magick and mysticism gives the show a different flavour. It's not just street crime that Ollie has to deal with. It also means they can bring in other sorts of characters, like Constantaine! It's nice that the showrunners were able to bring back the character for an appearance. It'd be neat if they could bring Constantaine back on Legends of Tomorrow or something. And it sounds like they will be introducing Vixen! Her cartoon was okay, but I'd much rather she join Ollie and Barry in the live action world.
And the Arrow portion of the crossover: much more serious than The Flash portion. Thank goodness there were no island flashbacks, but they did address something from Ollie's past, namely the son he never knew he had. I was totally hoping that the mother would turn out to be Sandra Hawke, mother to Connor Hawke, the second Green Arrow, but I think either the showrunners chickened out or they can't use that iteration Connor for some dumb reason. I found that the Arrow cast didn't have that much to do in their own episode, but it could be because there were a lot of characters to balance in the plot. They also had a cheat, with Barry running back in time to fix things, but you can't have the villain killing off everyone. That kind of puts an end to everything. I was disappointed that we didn't get to see Rip Hunter putting his team together, but I guess they're saving that for the pilot of Legends of Tomorrow.
I'm enjoying the lighter attitude Ollie has this season. It's nice to see him smiling more. Getting together with Felicity might not be a character development loved by all fans, but it gives him another dimension. Plus, he actually has chemistry with Felicity so their relationship works. It's also nice that it's not all sunshine and puppies. They have arguments and disagreement like real people do. As for the fact that we last see Felicity shot and bleeding heavily? I'm sure she's fine. The writers aren't that mean. She was probably critically injured, but she's not the person whose grave we see in the flashforward. I saw something hinting that they may be turning Felicity into Oracle, which is awesome, since she's pretty much Ollie's Oracle already, but that would mean that the shooting left Felicity paralyzed.
As for who's dead in the flashforward... It has to be someone Ollie would shed a tear over, so it's someone close to him, like Thea or Diggle. Maybe even Lance; he's lasted much longer on the show than I ever expected. But I'm leaning towards the son Ollie just found out about. He just met the kid; losing him would totally wreck Ollie.
Shows to look forward to in the new year:
- Agent Carter season two
- Legends of Tomorrow
- The X-Files revival
I'm super stoked for the return of Peggy but I'm also super excited for Legends of Tomorrow. I'm mildly interested to see the return of The X-Files, but I don't think I'll be able to watch it live. The Flash and Arrow will be on at the same time as Legends of Tomorrow so that's a lot of TV to watch in a week. Man, DC will be dominating the airwaves in the new year. With Supergirl, that's four straight days of DC content. If only their movies looked just as appealing...
