- So, that's how they ended Castle?

Spoilers for Castle 8x22, "Crossfire" )

It's funny, but I think this is the first time I was glad that a network cancelled a show. How often do you hear that?

- Damn you, The Flash!

- Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. had their finale. After all of the hype...

- I finished an awesome book the other day. The Rest of Us Just Live Here by Patrick Ness. If his name sounds kind of familiar, it's because he's the showrunner/head writer for the Doctor Who spin-off Class. He's the only reason I'm willing to give Class a chance.

Short review for The Rest of Us Just Live Here; no spoilers )

- I also had time to finish the first book in a cozy mystery series (let Wikipedia explain what a cozy mystery is). I usually have no interest in these things since they are absolute fluff, but then I discovered a series that has a knitting theme. A knitting theme! So I had to check it out. Now, I get why cozy mysteries are popular, they're fun and breezy and there's very little violence, but the writing is not great. I had a hard time keeping all of the characters straight because they were so generic. And of course, the main character meets a guy she just can't stand, but darn it if he's handsome and polite and always helping her out. Ugh. I thought the knitting element would be the saving grace, but it's really not. There were knitting patterns at the back, which was kind of cool. I may inflict this series on my book club. I'm sure my friends will enjoy it more.
First off, TV show renewals and cancellations:

- Well frak. ABC has cancelled Agent Carter. :-P Damn you! Please move the show to Netflix. I need more Peggy in my life.

- Incidently, ABC also cancelled Castle, which is a good thing since the show was going to suck without Beckett around. I wonder how they'll end the show. I read they filmed an extra scene just in case they didn't get a pick-up. Hopefully no one dies.

- Thankfully, Supergirl got renewed for another season. And it's moving to the CW! Crossovers galore! I think the show is also moving to Vancouver to take advantage of the low Canadian dollar. Makes sense. The Flash can do weekly wonders with a CW budget in Canada, so Supergirl can now follow suit. Now they just need to figure out how to incorporate Kara's world with Earth-1.

Moving on to general TV show thoughts:

- So Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. did have a reference to Captain America: Civil War.

Spoilers for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. 3x20, "Emancipation" )

- Kevin Smith's episode of The Flash wasn't bad. I don't think I've ever seen any of his movies, so I don't know what his directorial style is like, but I didn't feel like the tone was out of place. There was a tad more humour, but given the situation, you can't help but joke.

Spoilers for The Flash 2x21, "The Runaway Dinosaur" )

- Oh, there was something from last week's Arrow that bugged me.

Mild spoilers for Arrow 4x20, "Genesis" )

- The description on my PVR for the latest episode of Legends of Tomorrow started off with the words: "Rip and Rory..." I'm sorry. I instantly pictured Rip and, well, Rory from Doctor Who. If you must, please refer to Heat Wave as Mick and not Rory. But this also gives me a germ of an idea for a Doctor Who/Legends of Tomorrow fanfic.
- One week to go to the comic book expo! I suppose I'm excited, but the expo doesn't feel as big as it was last year. We're the second biggest con in Canada (I think), so you'd think it would be easy to get guests, but maybe it's not worth it to come here when the Canadian dollar isn't so hot. We're not a huge city either, so we don't have as much to offer as say, Toronto.

Oh well, fewer guests to see is easier on my wallet. ;-) Unlike last year, I only have two autographs and two photo-ops to get; Billie Piper and Alan Tudyk. I think I have my cosplays worked out. I'm still debating whether it's worth it to dress up for the Thursday. But this is what I have planned:

  • Thursday: Ace. More specifically, Ace from "Silver Nemesis". There are fewer embellishments on the jacket so that means fewer things knocking around when I'm walking.

  • Friday: Femme!Four. I didn't end up getting that argyle sweater, so that's something to work on for next year. Friday is also parade day so I'm praying for good weather. It doesn't need to be hot and sunny. I just don't want any rain or snow.

  • Saturday: Rose from the end of "Doomsday". Time to put my wrist warmers to go use. I doubt Billie Piper is going to notice them, but at least one part of the outfit looks like its on screen counterpart.

  • Sunday: Kaylee. My photo-op with Alan Tudyk is Sunday, so that's the reason for the fandom change. I love this costume. It's so comfy.

Programming isn't up yet, but I have a feeling I won't be running from panel to panel as much, which will be nice.

- Just read that if Castle season nine goes ahead, Stana Katic won't be a part of it. Wha? She's the other half of the show. What's Castle going to do without Beckett? Will the show just be him running his P.I. business with Haley and Alexis? Sounds like none of the characters who work at the precinct are coming back, so it does seem like the writers are dumping the police side of things. The article cites for "budgetary reasons". So lame. I say don't bother to renew the show if half of the cast won't be there. Just let Castle have a dignified series finale and everyone can go their separate ways without things getting super awkward.

And how would Beckett bow out? She and Castle just got back together. Would they kill her off? Have her move away for another job? You can't have the character leave without it being really weird.

- Supergirl had its season finale and, I don't know, it felt like it was lacking something.

Spoilers for Supergirl 1x20, "Better Angels" )

I have this funny notion that CBS has more restrictions on Supergirl than the CW has on Arrow, The Flash, and Legends of Tomorrow. Like, "More human drama, less crazy superhero antics!"

- Speaking of The Flash, we finally got a reference to Barry's adventure to Kara's world.

Spoilers for The Flash 2x18, "Versus Zoom" )

- And lastly, the new Doctor Who Companion will be announced on April 23 at half time of a football match. Okay... I mean, an announcement is great, but why during a football match? The article doesn't offer a set time for the announcement, so we fans not in the UK will just have to keep an eye on the interwebs for any news. At this point, I will take any updates, no matter how big or how small.
With most TV shows done for the winter, I just wanted to get some thoughts down.

Shows to look forward to in the new year:
- Agent Carter season two
- Legends of Tomorrow
- The X-Files revival

I'm super stoked for the return of Peggy but I'm also super excited for Legends of Tomorrow. I'm mildly interested to see the return of The X-Files, but I don't think I'll be able to watch it live. The Flash and Arrow will be on at the same time as Legends of Tomorrow so that's a lot of TV to watch in a week. Man, DC will be dominating the airwaves in the new year. With Supergirl, that's four straight days of DC content. If only their movies looked just as appealing...
TV shows are done for the season for the most part. Some thoughts:

Oh, and the Supergirl pilot is online. Was it leaked so people could gain a better impression from the show? Maybe.

Vague spoilers for the Supergirl pilot )

Well, now I have the summer to do other things like knit and get caught up on my video games.
Well, the first half of the current TV season seems to be done. Most shows have had their fall finales. Just wanted to jot down some thoughts on my shows.

Spoilers for the current season of Castle, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., The Flash, and Arrow )

Hmm, I'm only watching four shows this season. I didn't bother trying to watch more of Gotham and none of the other new shows have caught my fancy. The only thing I'm looking forward to in the new year is Agent Carter in January. Oh man, I hope it lives up to the hype. They've seeded a few things for the show on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. so it will be cool to see the follow through.

Now the only thing left to watch this year is the Doctor Who Christmas Special aka the best part about Christmas. :-)
It's the winter break for most TV shows, so I thought I would post some thoughts:

Spoilers for the current season of Castle, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and Arrow )

I didn't pick up any other new shows. Maybe once the season is over and shows get renewed I'll check some of them out.

And Sherlock is back on January 1st! YAY!!!

In honour of it's return and Doctor Who's approaching Christmas special, have a Wholock vid:

It's quite good overall but there are some bits that look a little weird. Shame this will never happen in real life.

TV time!

locker_monster: (I Love TV)
I think I'm right in saying the new TV season starts next week. A few shows are premiering next week with a major roll out the week after.

Shows I will be watching for sure:
- Castle
- Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
- Arrow
- Sherlock

Castle I watch purely for Nathan Fillion. I'm not sure I agree how last season ended. The show also needs to make better use of the supporting cast. Yes, it's great and all following Castle and Beckett, but the rest of the team deserves some time in the spotlight, too. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is a no-brainer. Joss Whedon + Marvel Cinematic Universe + Coulson = awesome! I'm excited to have Joss back on the television. It's about time he had a show that's a big hit and lasts longer than a season or two. Arrow's not back until October, but it'll be great to have it back. It got surprisingly good as the season went on. Summer Glau's the villain for the season so that should be great, too. And I still have no idea when Sherlock is back. Come on, BBC!

Shows I might be watching:
- CSI
- Almost Human

I'm really tempted to give up CSI. It's sort of my guilty pleasure show, ironically. I'm not a big fan of the police procedural so CSI is my one allowance. As for Almost Human, I'm on the fence. On the one hand, Karl Urban. On the other, FOX and JJ Abrams. :-P FOX doesn't have the greatest track record with sci-fi shows and I'm not a huge fan of JJ Abrams. He tends to slap his name on a show and then just watches it from afar.

There might be other shows I'm interested in. I just have to make an effort to read about the fall schedule.

Honourable mentions:
- Doctor Who's 50th anniversary special
- "An Adventure in Time and Space" (the docudrama about the show)

Title of Doctor Who's 50th anniversary special behind the cut and some thoughts )
I've been reading Heat Wave, because hey, why not help out Castle, right? Cute little book and I do mean little. On the show the book looks like your average hard cover but in reality it's no thicker than a graphic novel. But the dedication is exactly the same and yes, there is a sex scene on page 105. ;-) There's also a lovely picture of Nathan/Castle on the back cover and I like to think that when I'm reading the book on the train, people are staring at the picture of Nathan because he's so damn pretty.

As for the book itself, it's all right. The plot is nothing sensational and the writing doesn't knock my socks off. Actually, there are times when the writing is downright awful. Not the prose itself, but just the grammar errors. If a new person is talking, start a new paragraph please. And no capitals in the middle of a sentence. It really feels like this book was written in a hurry to get it out on time to promote the new season.

Basically, Heat Wave is just an episode of Castle, but in disguise. Obviously Nikki Heat is Beckett, but everyone else is present, too. The so horribly obviously named Jameson Rook is Castle (Rook/Castle; ha ha, so witty), and Raley and Ochoa are Ryan and Esposito, respectively. All the personalities are the same and Rook's reason for hanging around with the police is pretty much the same. There's even sexual tension between Heat and Rook, but unlike their counterparts, Heat and Rook can have the luxury of working through that tension. I like to think that within the universe of the show, someone at the police station read the book and called Castle on all the similarities. Or Beckett read the book and just shook her head at Castle. :-)

Ultimately, it's just a fun way to promote the show. It helpfully says, "Watch Castle on ABC" on the front cover, so if someone is staring at the shadowy naked lady on the cover, they actually might check out the show. Every little bit helps, right?

Ha, Castle had the best Firefly reference ever last night.

But I don't know, the costume looked... off somehow. I think it was the pants. They weren't tight enough. :-D
