Firefly/Doctor Who crossover fic: A Different Kind of Companion (1/20)

Title: A Different Kind of Companion (1/20)
Rating: PG-13
Characters/Pairings: Ten, Rose, Ten/Rose, Mal, Inara, Mal/Inara
Timeline: A week after "Heart of Gold" for Firefly, and just before "Army of Ghosts" for Doctor Who
Summary: After an encounter in the 26th century, Inara and Rose find themselves in unfamiliar settings.
Disclaimer: Firefly and Doctor Who belong to their respective creators and showrunners. Too much awesome would happen if Joss Whedon and Russell T Davies ever worked on something together.
A/N: The biggest thank you goes out to [info]browncoat_2x2 for betaing this story and helping with the minor changes.

They hadn’t spoken a word since she had barged her way into the shuttle.

A desert landscape stretched out before them. Off in the horizon, Inara could barely make out the small town Mal was flying to. She glanced at him again but his gaze was solely trained out the front window.

            Inara cleared her throat. “M–”

“You didn’t want to come, you shoulda got off when you had the chance.”

“I would have happily stayed on Serenity if you had stopped avoiding me for a few minutes.”

“I’ve been busy. Some of us don’t make money lying on our backs.”

The jab about her chosen profession was familiar territory. Inara ignored it. “It’s been a week, Mal. You haven’t said anything to me.”

Mal reached up to flick a switch, though Inara was fairly sure it didn’t have a function. But it did stretch out the silence before Mal responded. “Ain’t much to say. You wanna leave, I ain’t gonna stop you.”

Looking away from Mal, Inara wrung her hands in her lap. Maybe she should have stayed behind on Serenity. “Will this take long?” she asked.

Wǒ bù zhīdao. Settin’ up a job with new employer can be tricky. Fella ain’t gonna hire us until he knows we can get it done.”

She had heard Mal explain this to Zoe yesterday. It was, in fact, his reason for going on his own. Less intimidating, Mal had said. Inara hadn’t had any intention of accompanying him, but she had thought she could talk to Mal, alone, in the shuttle before he left. But in his rush to meet a potential employer, Mal hadn’t noticed her enter the shuttle and had taken off before Inara had even had the chance to grab a hold of something. Her backside was still smarting.

“I suppose you want me to stay in the shuttle.”

“Jannik never said anything about comin’ alone. I figure you can use your ‘feminine wiles’ on him if things go south.” Mal didn’t look at her once.

“I’ll try not to get in the way,” Inara said quietly.

* * *

Giant stingrays flew about in the sky.

Rose couldn’t pronounce the name of the planet, despite having the TARDIS translate the word into English for her, but it was still a beautiful vista. The Doctor had materialized the time machine in the middle of some craggy rock formations, boasting that no humanoid life forms had set foot here in millennia. When she had stepped out of the TARDIS, the sun was just setting.

Now the sky was a mix of orange and pink, the mingled hues reflecting off the flawless surface of the lake before them. It was just them and the stingrays.

“How long are you gonna stay with me?”

It seemed like such a random question. Hadn’t she shown him time and again that she would always stay with him? Rose couldn’t imagine a life without the Doctor. The Doctor looked over at Rose and in that moment, she knew he needed to hear it for himself. To hear her speak it aloud so it would become part of time. A nine hundred year old time traveller and he needed to be reassured.

Rose smiled. The answer was simple. “Forever.”

            The Doctor smiled back.

“Where do you want go next?” The Doctor’s usual enthusiasm returned to his voice. “The Leisure Hive on Argolis? Ooh.” The Doctor cringed. “Actually, the last time I was there I was aged 500 years. Not the prettiest of sights. I know, Zaakros! Galaxy’s largest flora collection. A rose by any other name would smell as sweet.”

“Like I haven’t heard that one before,” said Rose, but she still grinned.

            “Off we go then.”

The Doctor returned to the TARDIS, but Rose trailed behind. She cast one more look at the sky before she closed the doors. She was never going to forget this day.

Wǒ bù zhīdao = I don't know

AWESOME! :D

Everyone should combine my two favourite fandoms and my two favourite pairings. BECAUSE REALLY. That is just so hot.

Also: I like the contrast here. Mal and Inara are all angry and tetchy to each other, which is understandable, given HoG. But we know that they more or less find each their way back to each other, and can theorize that at least *attempt* at something post-BDM. Whereas the Doctor and Rose could not be more in love and in tune with each other, but we know they're headed for doom. *weeps*

The answer was simple. “Forever.”

And it should be mentioned, THAT'S THE LINE THAT PRETTY MUCH ALWAYS SETS ME OFF SNIFFING. But you described the scene beautifully. *squishes Ten and Rose*

That's the neat thing about writing Ten/Rose and Mal/Inara. Their relationships start out the opposite of each other but do a reverse in the end. That was half the fun of contrasting them; knowing that Ten and Rose were headed for doom while Mal and Inara sort of get their stuff together.

And yeah, that line. I just had to include it. :-D

I am so excited, this is so awesome! It's based on two of my absolute favorite shows and absolute pairings, plus, you're a really awesome writer! I can't wait for more

Thanks! This is my first try at a crossover but what two great fandoms for a first go. :-D

Great start! Two of my absolute favorite universes in one, and two of my favorite ships. I was waiting for someone to tell this story. *g*

My second favorite bit? That he needed "to hear her speak it aloud so it would become part of time." Lovely.

My absolute favorite, though? I have to say the banner and the icon. Too perfect!

Any chance I might make use of the icon my own self? Consider it free advertising...and I'll be sure to link the fic in my LJ!

I'm glad that you like the story. Just wait until the two pairings are in the same scene. ;-)

I hadn't planned on making an icon and banner, but when the mood hits you, who am I to ignore it? :-D And if you like the icon, I can do you one better. I've got another Ten/Inara icon but I can't use it since I'm out of icon space. If you like, I could give it to you.

Excellent! Definitely looking forward to the meetup.

Icons...hmm, an all-new Ten/Inara icon? Sounds awesome! Though I'd still love to snag the first one I saw as well if you'd be cool with that?

Sure, you can use the other icon as well. Do you have a paid account? I can take advantage of the e-mail forwarding function and send you the icons as attachments.

I do indeed, and that would be great!

I do so love Firefly/DW crossovers. :-)

Yeah. It's like the two fandoms were meant to be together. :-D
