As strange as the TARDIS was, Inara learned it was still a fully functioning ship like Serenity. There were crew quarters, a dining area – though the Doctor made it seem like it was hardly used – an infirmary, and a storage area. Inara commented that it was a lot of space for just two people, but the Doctor deflected the question as they came upon the entrance to the wardrobe.
“There should be some dresses that fit you,” he said as they walked in, “but I’ve got fashions spanning multiple eras and worlds if you want to try something different.”
The next logical question was obviously to ask why the Doctor would have dresses from different places, but the size of the wardrobe was enough to leave her speechless for a moment. The room was similar to the console room, with its domed shape and curving spires, but this room was a several stories high. She had to crane her neck to see the top and then it was barely visible. As she walked along a catwalk to the centre of the wardrobe, she cast a look over the side and saw it was the same for the bottom.
“Maybe Victoria?” the Doctor said to himself as he looked through an assortment of clothes. They were all hung on a rack that circled around a spiral staircase at the heart of the room. But there was only one platform. Inara couldn’t understand how one could reach the clothes at the top.
“You look about the same size.” The Doctor reached inside his suit jacket. “Are you against ruffles?” A chuckle seized him. “Sounds like a political party.” He pulled out a thin cylindrical object and pointed it at the rack, a blue light at the front end lighting up. Suddenly the rack was spinning, rotating around them. Various pieces of clothing flew by before the rack finally stopped.
Inara eyed the object in the Doctor’s hand. It looked to be shorter than a calligraphy brush but just as thick. “Sonic screwdriver,” offered the Doctor when he noticed that she was staring.
A set of three dresses with wide skirts and bouffant sleeves came to a stop in front of them. Inara could see that two had a bodice which laced up in the back. She had seen similar dresses at the parties and balls she attended with clients, but the colours were more vibrant. “These don’t look like they’re Rose’s,” said Inara. She reached for one of the dresses, a white one with a high collar and edged with lace.
“No. Rose is stuck firmly in the twenty-first century. I’ve known quite a few people. They tend to leave their things behind now that I think about it. If these don’t suit you, I have some garish clothes from Earth, 1980s.”
Inara let the dress fall back into place. “Rose is from the past?”
“I met her in 2005.” The Doctor gave the rack another spin and this time the clothes rotated upwards.
Five hundred years ago. Rose was from a time when Earth still existed, Inara realized. But that didn’t explain the Doctor or the TARDIS… “And what about you?”
The rack came to a stop. The clothes here were less formal. “I’m timeless. Which can’t be said about some of these clothes.” Doctor pulled out a multi-coloured blouse that looked like it was made out of foil and frowned. “What was that girl thinking when she bought this?” He hung the blouse back up.
Inara spotted a short skirt made out of leather. That didn’t seem practical either. She pushed it aside and continued browsing. “What was it like? Earth.”
“In the year 2005?” The Doctor leaned against a large ornate mirror and crossed his arms. “Five hundred years before your lot’s exodus and the human population was well on its way to destroying the ecosystem. It’s surprising the Earth didn’t burn up sooner. At the same time, humans were on the cusp of a glorious new revolution, working their way to taking their first steps into a larger universe.”
The Doctor turned his gaze upwards. “I could have taken you there in an instant. Time and space at our fingertips and we’re stuck.” He straightened up, the top of his head grazing against a black leather jacket hanging off the side of the mirror.
“You strike me as a resourceful man,” said Inara, spotting a white garment higher up on the rack. “I’ve learned nothing can keep a reliable ship down.”
Reaching up, the Doctor fingered the cuff of the leather jacket. He appeared lost in thought for a moment. Then he snapped to attention. “And can’t leave Rose on her own. I would never hear the end of it if I left her behind.”
“She seems very dedicated.” Up close, Inara saw that the garment was a white dress with wide sleeves.
“She actually promised she would stay with me forever.”
Inara glanced over at the Doctor. He didn’t seem too awed by the sentiment. “You don’t think Rose was speaking as a young woman with a passing fancy for a charismatic man and his aging ship.”
The Doctor looked to the dress Inara had found. “Gallifreyan. Can’t argue with your choice. I’ll leave you to change. I’ll be in the console room if you need me. If you get lost, the TARDIS can guide you there.”
She watched him leave the wardrobe. And she’d thought Mal was a mystery.
Further A/N: I had some fun researching what clothes might be in the TARDIS wardrobe. The dresses are Victoria's, a Victorian companion of the Second Doctor's. The first dress Inara reaches for is the dress worn by Sarah Jane in "The Pyramids of Mars". The multi-coloured foil blouse is Peri's, a companion of the Fifth and Sixth Doctor, worn in "The Two Doctors". And yes, it was a foil like material; it actually burned the actress while they were filming in Spain. The leather mini skirt is Tegan's, a Fifth Doctor companion, from "Resurrection of the Daleks". The Doctor fingers Nine's jacket and then the dress Inara chooses was worn by Romana I, a Fourth Doctor companion, during "The Armageddon Factor".

Hopefully that works, but the clothes aren't overly important to the plot. But it is true that some of the Doctor's companions didn't have a very good fashion sense. ;-)

The image of the 'wardrobe' is quite vivid. My sister (who is a costumer) and I would gladly spend hours - maybe days - checking it out.
I anxiously await the next installment.

Heh, I wouldn't mind attempting that. I just wish the site was back up. It's the only site I know of that has promo pictures from old school Who.
