It took me longer than I expected, but I finally finished Wizard's First Rule. I am so very glad I bought a paperback edition. My gosh, this is a long book. And there are 11 books, all of the same length! Terry Goodkind sure knows how to write an epic. So, with the first book done, I'm off to find the first season of Legend of the Seeker. I really don't need a new TV show right now, but I really want to check out this show.

I can only assume some elements will be different. There's certainly enough material to keep the show going for a long time, but some stuff probably doesn't translate that well from page to screen. Though, judging from all the pictures some of you have posted, Richard and Kahlan's relationship stays the same. :-)

Are they more angst-y though? The book version of the characters certainly have their fill of angst, but it sort of resolves itself by the end of the first book. For all I know their relationship goes off the rails in the second book, but I know where they end up towards the end of the series so the two of them must do something right.

The only thing that really bugged me was Richard's special destiny. I hate special destinies. Funny, considering my all time favourite show is about a girl with a special destiny. But why must all characters in fantasy novels be part of some prophecy or something? Can't regular people be able to defeat the bad guys too? It kind of sends the wrong message, I think. You have to rely on one person to make everything right instead of doing it yourself. Anyway, it was the only thing that really took away from the story.

Does season two of Legend of the Seeker have a premiere date? Maybe I can watch the first season in time for the second. Oh boy, another marathon session.

I'm sure somebody's already done it (probably many times, in fact), but I've kind of wanted to do a Whedonish subversion of the special destiny trope. Character has a prophecy that they're the one to defeat the evil overlord, goes through half the book or so... and gets killed by a monster. The rest of the book has his more or less average group of friends taking down the evil overlord, not with the several mystical artefacts they were looking for to fulfill the prophecy, but just bravery and some really good planning, and maybe eventually learn the whole 'prophecy' thing was made up by the evil overlord to keep people from even trying to rise up against him (and on the off chance somebody matches the obscure conditions of the prophecy, either they get themselves killed hunting the mystical ruby of reckoning the prophecy says is required, or if not, he can hunt them down and destroy them to crush the spirit of any resistance).

Season 2 starts November 6th here so you have some time to watch season 1. I watched it on hulu so you could try there. I need to get on the ball and read Stone of Tears as I have only read a few pages so far.

Glad you are getting on the bandwagon! Hee. The show is great.

Hmm, that's soonish, but I might be able to make it. Sadly, Hulu doesn't work for me since I'm in Canada. I know there are ways around it, but I'm not overly fond of streaming video anyway. I'll find a way!

You guys keep posting images of Richard's awesome abs. How could I not watch? ;-)

You know, I don't think I've ever seen this. I would love to see this in a book or on a TV show. The idea of building up this really likable hero character and then suddenly killing him/her off would be a great way to mess with the reader/viewer. And no magical resurrection either.

I'm surprised Joss hasn't done this yet. He's killed off characters who seem important, but never big hero characters. Well, Doyle, I guess, but it's not like Buffy or Angel bit the bullet halfway through their first episodes.

Ooh, could I borrow some? I just know it's going to take me forever to get through these books so getting them from the library really doesn't work.
