Let's see... I use screencaps that I capture myself. One frame per second, so sometimes I end up with a lot of screencaps, but I do end up whittling them down to just the shots I need. The program I use is ImageGrab (http://paul.glagla.free.fr/imagegrab_en.htm). I use that in tandem with Photoshop CS2, ImageReady CS2, and Jasc Animation Shop. I spiff up the frames in Photoshop and then combine everything in either ImageReady or Jasc Animation. Both programs have their good points, but if you're having troubles keeping icons below 40KB than ImageReady is better because you can optimize the file size. Only downside to that is that the quality of the picture will go down. I don't know if this will help or not. I'm pretty much learning how to do stuff as I go along. There's probably better tutorials out there. :-)
