It was awesomeness. I've read every Holmes story, but not in years (I was on a big Holmes kick as a teen/young adult). My young adult daughter is more obsessed than I was, and she brought down her OED size Volume of Holmes stories to flip through as she watched Sherlock to find which stories were referenced... though she picked them up easily enough without the book.

IA, Updating works sometimes and sometimes not-- most often not because of Media Suits' need to "improve things" by making them stupid. But the 'suits' involved in this one were not the stereotypical suits (and certainly not Hollywood suits-- the most dangerous kind). This was updated without losing any of what it was, and the few changes they made to character-- moriarty, as you point out-- work.

I think I might have been more impressed with Gattiss' script than Moffat's, and I was pretty darned impressed with Moffat's. That middle one was just "okay" but nothing much to write home about. But the first and last.. were spectacular.

The score-- it was written BEFORE the score for the recent movie! But it aired later. Poor composer-- everyone will think he was doing a knock off of the film score, but his came first. I loved both of them.
