I got the distinct impression that the Doctor sent out Amy and Rory and River to investigate and then Canton pretended to chase them, so the Silence would pay less attention to them. The Silence would think Canton was doing their bidding. They'd think the really dangerous one, the Doctor, was out of the game. Canton also spent that time building a 'prison', so when it time to regroup they could do so without the Silence thinking anything was up.
The Doctor didn't quite come up with as much info as he wanted, but he got a clear picture of their overall modus operandi. Which he then implemented during the onscreen story.
