I can't believe they have John Shiban writing for Torchwood. I remember him from The X-Files and his episodes were notorious for being really bad all the time. Will that be the case now? Who knows.
Frankly, the plot is still dragging. It's like a zombie, lumbering around. And they keep throwing in other things as well. I mean, if this was a regular season, that'd be fine; I like character stuff. But here, it's kind of superfluous. Get to heart of the mysterious conspiracy please.
I find it funny that they shift the action to L.A. for no real apparent reason. Yes, Phi-Corp has its headquarters there, but it could have easily been in New York or something. Instead, they drag the team to the other side of country. Still, it did lead to the best lines from the episode. I just laughed when Gwen was talking to Rhys and she was going on about how they're living in a shed and here she is, standing in a sunlight beach front, the wind in her hair. "Was that a seagull?" "No, it was a mad woman." I think Gwen is starting to like the US a little more each day. They may use funny words like "cell phone" and "gas station", but hey, sunshine!
Oh, and I thought of this since last week. So Jack said last episode that it's like the human race is being willed to stay alive. The whole situation kind of reminds me of what happened to Owen. He was technically dead but he stayed alive no matter what. It's a lot like what's happening to people now. The dead don't stay dead. Could Miracle Day be related to those "risen mittens" (as Ianto called them)? Could Owen be involved? Yes, he died in an explosion, but it happened off screen. And the people behind this supposedly know Jack so that fits, too. But then, it seems like this has been planned for awhile now, so I don't think Owen's involved. But maybe the aliens or people responsible for the gloves are involved somehow.
Though, there is one problem when you say that someone knows Jack. He's met a lot of people. When the reveal happens, it's going to be someone we the audience don't know and the impact won't be as heavy. Unless it's John Hart or something. James Marsters does live in the US. They could have easily hired him and he wouldn't have had to fly anywhere. Ooh, maybe it is John. I'd happily accept, though, really, only because it would be James Marsters. ;-)
The show also continues to explore the breakdown of health care because of Miracle Day. I like to think that Canada's doing fine. We have universal health care and lots of empty space up in the North. I'm sure the Canadian government's like, "We'll send everyone to the North West Territories!" ;-) Kidding aside, this seems to be part of the plan, locking away the should be dead. The mysterious triangle people also need a spokesperson or something or they wouldn't have smooshed that senator lady person. They "have" Oswald, but have him for what? Is it like mild hypnosis or something? To get people around to their way of thinking?
Random (and also shallow) thoughts: mmm, Jack in regular clothing... Seriously, that scene of him and Gwen in the park? I know his WWII coat is an iconic part of him, but damn, he's so hot looking in regular clothes, too. Heck, even when he's in that horrible green uniform he's easy on the eyes. :-) I'm glad they acknowledged that Gwen's American accent was atrocious and that made the scene all the more funny. Their plan was horrible though. Okay, acquiring the guy's voice and hand-print is doable, but his retina pattern from an iPhone? There is not an app for that. The assassin guy had the right idea. Take the actual eye. Gross, but more believable. Though, they did "hang a lantern" on the silliness of Torchwood's plan. Gwen has that line "I can't believe that worked" or whatever, so even they thought the plan was thin. And more Rhys! I hope he gets a subplot where he's trying to track down Gwen's dad.
So, with Doctor Who back August 27, that means there'll be an overlap. For the first time, I think, Torchwood and Doctor Who will be on at the same time. It's not super important or anything, but hey, its more Who related content for the masses.
