I just think a quick comment from Amy would have been nice, an acknowledgement of the coat but not an explanation, since that is the Doctor's way. Maybe the coat gets destroyed later on.
Or, Matt Smith was cold while filming so they gave him a nice, warm coat to wear so he doesn't freeze to death. ;-)
