Chapter One. Chapter Two. Chapter Three. Chapter Four. Chapter Five.

The man holding Rose raised his gun and pointed it at the curtained doorway. He waited, his fingers tightening around the handle of the weapon. Rose could feel his chest heave as he breathed deeply. But it was silent. The gunfire had stopped.

“We’re leaving.” Hugging Rose close to his body, he forced her to walk forward. She stomped, kicked, and elbowed him several times, but he still wouldn’t let go, which wasn’t surprising considering how big he was.

But she struggled anyway. It helped to focus her.

At the curtained doorway they paused. When they weren’t hit with a hail of bullets, the man readjusted his hold on Rose, gripping her around the upper arm. Roughly, he pushed her into the main room.

She expected to see someone waiting, a victor maybe. Instead the main room was filled with bodies. Most of the men were dead, blood and gore where body parts should have been. The ones unfortunate enough to still be alive let out feeble moans but nothing could be done for them as the life drained from them. It was the kind of carnage she’d only seen on television; futuristic weapons were a lot less… messy.

Finally, the man let go of her and shoved her down to the floor. Rose took most of the impact on her hands, her palms stinging. Broken glass, shards of wood, and bullet casings littered the floor. This close she could see drops of blood.

The cocking of a gun brought Rose back to the room. She didn’t have to turn to know the man was pointing his weapon at her. She thought of running, but it wasn’t likely she could outrun a bullet.

Her thoughts turned to the Doctor.

A single shot rang out. Rose grimaced at the sound, expecting agonizing pain to follow. None came.

Risking a glance over her shoulder, she saw that the man was no longer standing behind her. He was lying, slumped over on the floor, a blank expression on his lifeless face. Quickly, she scrambled to her feet and moved away from the body, her foot coming down on the arm of another man, the one with the scar.

Rose stumbled back and collided with something soft. She spun around and came face to face with the man in the brown coat. Small cuts ran crisscross along his left check and his expression was grim. He held a gun in his right hand.

Rose prepared to run, but the man gently grabbed her forearm. “Easy. I ain’t gonna hurt you.”

“You killed these men.” She yanked her arm from his grip.

“I killed a few of them. They did the rest themselves.” The man tentatively touched the cuts on his face.

            “They’re still dead.”

“And you’re not. One might think you ought to be grateful.”

He was right. She had escaped battles with Daleks and Cybermen. This was nothing. Absently, she tucked her hair behind her ears, suddenly noticing the blood on her shirt.

The man noticed her expression. “You hurt?”

“I… A man was shot right in front of me. It’s his.” The red stood out against the grey of her shirt. “Never seen that much blood. Your friend pulled me out of the fight–”

“Inara?” The man’s voice picked up a tone of urgency. “Where is she?”

“We ran into the back room, but there were these men. I think,” Rose paused and met the man’s gaze. “I think she was shot.”

The man hurried into the back room. Rose chased after him. “She’s not there! She and the Doctor…” Rose faltered. Where was the Doctor? If he had left in the TARDIS to get to safety, shouldn’t he have been back for her by now?

“Where are they?” The man strode back into the main room.

“The Doctor has a ship. Your friend’s on board.”

“Ships don’t fit in a back room,” snapped the man.

“Well this one does,” Rose replied vehemently. “The Doctor’s gonna come back. He always does.”

Before the man could say anything else, the thud of hurried footsteps sounded behind Rose. The man raised his gun and–

“Drop it!” a voice commanded. Rose turned. A handful of men were entering the bar, their own guns raised. From the way they were dressed, she guessed they were the local police. “Drop the gun now!”

Kào,” muttered the man. With a scowl, he threw his gun onto the floor.

The policemen quickly swarmed them. “Take them into custody,” one of them ordered. “We’ll question them at the station.”

“What? Custody?” Rose glanced at the man in the brown coat but he seemed indifferent. He made no complaints as his wrists were slipped into a pair of handcuffs. One of the policemen roughly grabbed her wrists. “Wait. I wasn’t even a part of this.”

“Like we haven’t heard that before,” said the officer. He manhandled Rose into the handcuffs and then shoved her out of the bar.

Where was the Doctor when you needed him?
