So here we are. Part two. Does it make part one better or worse?
I'm kind of leaning towards worse. Davros' summons has some weight to it when you think he's just dying and he wants to see his arch enemy one more time. When you find out that the whole thing is a ploy to create hybrid Dalek-Time Lords, the story lost me. Seriously? Hybrid Daleks? And some prophecy from Gallifrey on top of that and how the Doctor might be running because of it? If Moffat hadn't thrown that in, I would have liked this episode. The Doctor and Davros in a room talking about all they've done and the mistakes they've made was interesting stuff. There's enough tension and action going on with Missy and Clara so it doesn't feel like you're just watching two guys talk. Alas, it was not meant to be. I also didn't like the fact that the Doctor knew this was a ploy all along. Yeah, he's a clever guy, but how could he guess that Davros was after his regeneration energy? How could he know that the lifeforce of every Dalek on Skaro was keeping Davros alive? When the Doctor seemed like he was over his head in the first part, that was different. We usually don't see him like that. Oh sure, he didn't plan for Clara to "die" and we do see him acting desperate and dangerous because of that, but the rest he planned for. Moffat can only pull this trick so many times before it gets rote and annoying.
And really? The Daleks are brought down by their own sewer? Wha? The Doctor's whole plan relied on the sewers revolting.
I'm starting to wonder if the Doctor only gave Missy his confession dial because he just needed her to tag along. She's the one with the escape plan and the rescue plan. But did she know that the sewers were a large part of the Doctor's plan? Or was it just a lucky guess? I don't know. I guess they're on the same wavelength. The Missy and Clara show was vaguely amusing, but you'd think Clara would learn. Don't do anything Missy suggests! We do learn some new things about the Daleks while they're running around the sewers, like why they shout "Exterminate" all the time, and Clara using a Dalek as a disguise reminded me of the time Ian did the same thing in "The Daleks", and the Doctor nearly shooting Clara while she's inside the Dalek tank was a nice bit of tension, but it just wasn't enough to save the episode. Or maybe there's stuff I missed and I need to watch the episode again.
Random: Oh man, that line about the only other chair on Skaro. It's such a left field joke but it made me laugh. It's funny because it's true. The other line that made me laugh was the Doctor's "Admit it; you've all had this exact nightmare." It was hilarious to see him in Davros' chair. They've never done that before. I do hope that Peter had a ton of fun scooting around in Davros' chair. Oh, we did get an explanation for how Missy survived, not that there was anyone who didn't figure out that it was a teleport. And I'm sure she teleported away before the Daleks could blast her. Sonic sunglasses? Really? So there's no sonic screwdriver this season? No wonder the Doctor was wearing his shades so much in the trailers. Is this a ploy to get everyone to buy Ray Bans or something? The bit at the beginning where we got a glimpse of Four and One was nice. Black and white, too; gave it an old school feel. And why is this episode called "The Witch's Familiar"? Is Clara meant to be the familiar in the title? Clara hanging upside down in a dress. I hear that was actually Jenna hanging upside. Must have been fun for her. Oh, and Clara inside the Dalek sort of had echoes of Oswin, which made it slightly chilling.
So what does this mean for the Daleks? I don't believe for one second that the Daleks in the sewers were able to destroy every Dalek in the city. I'm sure Davros is fine, too. So we have Hybrid Dalek-Time Lords running around space and time? Or was the transfer cut short before too much could happen? Honestly, I don't care. It's just one more thing they've tried to do to the Daleks to make them more threatening and I'm sure they'll abandon it when it doesn't work, like the rainbow redesign.
We're underwater next week. We haven't had a proper underwater episode since, what? "Warriors of the Deep"?
Is there no Doctor Who Extra anymore? There are some behind the scenes clips on the BBC's YouTube page, but there's no "episode". Is this another cutback?
