Comic Con is in full swing, meaning lots of news and trailers are being released. I haven't been reading too much, for fear of spoilers, but I did watch the two new trailers for Justice League and Wonder Woman. And you know what? I'm actually excited to see these movies. Shocking, I know. Hope and optimism about DC Extended Universe movies.
In a radical, but welcomed, change of direction from Batman v Superman, the Justice League movie actually has a sense of humour:
Barry is so going to be the quippy one on the team. It feels like he's channelling the Flash that was in the Bruce Timm Justice League cartoon. The other great thing about that scene? Bruce's great relief that someone agreed to join the team. You totally get the sense that Arthur and Vic both turned him down before he went to see Barry. And Barry shaved! In BvS, he had a bushy beard that did not fit the character.
What I'm not loving: Barry's suit. Just look at the team photo here. It's too damn busy. The suit on The Flash is a million times better. This one looks like armour, which seems dumb. Yes, Barry needs protection from friction when he's running, but the suit also needs to be lightweight and flexible. Hopefully, this is the only thing that doesn't work in the movie.
The Wonder Woman trailer also looks like fun, though its tone is more serious than the Justice League one:
If only one DCEU movie can be a giant box office hit, I'd want it to be Wonder Woman. Then all of the naysayers can stop claiming that women can't headline a superhero movie.
Most of the trailer features Diana beating up the bad guys in slow motion, but there do seem to be some scenes at a party. Typically, there is a scene where Diana and Steve are having a dance and I'm sure they have a meaningful conversation with some flirting at the same time. I know Steve is Diana's longtime love interest in the comics, but their romance shouldn't be a big subplot. Give Diana a chance to establish herself as a separate character and then maybe have her pursue Steve romantically.
And I have to say that the Wonder Woman theme is fabulous. The pounding drums is very primal and that suits Diana as a warrior.
