(Hmm, I really need a Stargate icon)

Okay, second part of Atlantis' premiere. I'm less angry now. :-) The resolution was good enough but I still have some qualms.

I'm very thankful reactivating the nanites in Elizabeth gave her something to do. That's the problem her character was always faced with. She can run the city like nobody's business but if she has to go off-world she normally has to sit back and let the boys shoot the guns. Really. Just look at Epiphany. You've got a lovely image of Rodney and Carson, with their guns raised, standing in front of Elizabeth to protect her but all she can do is stand there in return. For this episode at least, she could give intel, even hold off the Replicators so Sheppard could do his stuff. Okay, so Elizabeth is now a gloried MapQuest, but still, she ran out of the Jumper and was able to fight back, so to speak.

Of course, it was only for the one episode. Now she's in the hands of the Replicators, declared dead by the SGC. Now, we all know she's not dead because knocked-down-to-recurring characters always have a chance to return. :-) Ford, anyone? Which kind of brings me to the thing I didn't like. It's basically Ford all over again. You've got a team member with the bits of bad guy in them and it's made them uber-cool but it also means they can't stay in the city. Well, I suppose Elizabeth could have gone back but that's not in the cards. It's only slightly different from Ford because they know where Elizabeth is, but getting her back would probably take another massive assault on the Replicators. The thing I wouldn't mind seeing is, like, an evil Elizabeth. They sort of touched on that idea with Ford; he kidnapped the team and made them help him attack the Wraith, but he never actively was trying to kill everyone or destroy the city. The Replicators could so use the nanites in Elizabeth to control her. The team could find her in one episode, bring her back to the city, and you've got a Trojan horse thing going. Okay, it sounds a little predictable but I really can't think of any other way the writers could bring back Elizabeth. I suppose she could escape on her own, which would be very acceptable as well. :-D The Replicators are fighting the Wraith now and Elizabeth has been dealing with the Wraith a lot longer than the Replicators have. Maybe the team will run into her that way, while fighting Wraith. But if Elizabeth just comes back for the mid-season two parter and then disappears again like a certain character I will be angry. The writers would just be repeating themselves and we won't see the consequences of Elizabeth being held by the Replicators.

A thing that didn't occur to me until this episode was what if they're setting up Teyla to be the leader of the city? Sheppard tells her to stay behind because she's the other capable leader they have. I doubt the IOA would go for it, but it would give Teyla something to do. Of course it would also mean she's stuck on the city, restricting her character. They're planning something with Teyla's character though; they said so on the season four commentaries for Atlantis. I mean, with bringing Sam over obviously everyone's going to assume she'll be running the city. Why not switch it up? Or, it's just a big red herring. Teyla cleaning off Elizabeth's desk at the end is just that and newly promoted Sam (yay!) will take over because they need someone at that desk. Though, if they did have Teyla replace Elizabeth it's like they're saying the two are interchangeable and that's dumb.

There was techno-jargon galore in this episode so I'm just going to glaze over that. I thought the heist would be cooler or harder, but I can overlook that since it gave Elizabeth something to do. ;-) Forcing Sheppard to upload the new software was funny though. We all know they would land the city because they have all this stock footage of the city sitting on the water and you can't reuse those if the city isn't sitting on a body of water on a new planet. Just change the background and there you go, new planet. With five moons! I assume they had enough power to dial Earth at the end and they weren't using the intergalactic bridge. That disappoints me slightly. I read this season would be given a "soft reset". I enjoyed the show in the first season because they were cut off. I thought maybe they were going to limit the connection the city had with Earth since SG-1 isn't on anymore.

So Sam and Dr. Lee are still in the city by the end of the episode. Too much to hope for that Dr. Lee will hang around? He was so cute, referring to Warcraft and wanting to take a picture. It's been awhile since he's been off-world so why not be kind and let him stay in another galaxy for a bit? Sam getting a promotion (off camera) wasn't something I hadn't expected. Maybe they promote her in one of the DVD movies? Either way, she outranks Sheppard, which explains his tone with her and vice versa. Plus, Sam's probably a little older than Sheppard so why not. I can now handle Sam being on the show. Somehow, her being a full colonel just makes things easier.

Now, here's a thought sort of related to Atlantis, but not really. Through the whole episode Rodney is very pessimistic, forecasting the worst for every situation they get in to. That's Rodney, though, right? I've been reading a lot of stuff about Canadian culture and it occurs to me Rodney is totally a reflection of a typical Canadian. Apparently we're all pessimistic and loser figures because we didn't go through a revolution and are in close proximity to a powerhouse country. It can be seen in all our forms of media. Right from the start, Rodney has been written as the character who sort of sits back in conflict and sees the downside to everything. Yes, they write him that way because it's funny, but I also think the writers, some who are Canadian, are working in that Canadian quality. Whether they did this on purpose or not, who knows, but since Rodney is like the only Canadian character I can think of on a major American television show then it's nice to see they aren't portraying him like he's of another country. Anyway, just a random thought (mostly because I still need to do more research for my paper and I feel like I'm actually working on it by doing this).
