locker_monsterWhile I prefer my Joss Whedon on TV, Joss in comic book form is still just as good. The obvious downside to having Buffy in comic form is length; 22 pages (which can be read in 10 minutes) versus 44 minutes. The fact that Joss can pack in a good storyline into just 22 pages shows what a great writer he is.
So #11 is another stand alone, but we actually get to see Twilight in action. Looks like Mr. Mask can rip off the steeples of churches as well as fly. I'm under the impression that Twilight wants to bring an end to magick, but unless he's a demon or a mutant that must mean his strength and flight come from using magick. Doesn't quite fit there. Who knows; maybe there'll be twist. Maybe? More like probably. This is Joss. Case in point, the last few panels with Twilight. He's lifting his mask while talking to a bunch of demons and military types. I totally thought Joss was going to reveal his identity. Then I turned the page and what do we get? Twilight saying, "Sorry, itchy neck. Where was I?" Oh, Joss. :-) I suck at speculation, but wouldn't it make sense for Twilight to be someone we know? I'm kinda convinced Twilight might be Caleb. Yes, far-fetched considering Buffy sliced him in half, but at one point, Buffy tries the same trick with Twilight and he says, "I know that move, Slayer." No one, besides Angel, saw Buffy kill Caleb; no one should know that she used the scythe to divide him. Unless demons or vampires found the body, but who had time to go looking around the cemetery? Also, there's a flashback panel of Buffy fighting Caleb. Buffy's talking about sharing her power and I'm not sure how that scene relates to what she's talking about. Anyway, I putting my bet on Caleb as Twilight. And just think; if this was a real episode that would mean Nathan Fillion would be back. ;-)
The other great thing about the issue? Buffy and Satsu having a heart to heart in the middle of fighting vampires. The vampires are clearly not important as the issue of Satsu in love with Buffy. Buffy brings up two good points. People who love her do end up leaving and she's always alone as a result. It seems like Twilight is trying to manipulate the whole alone thing against Buffy. Sad part is, it's true. Buffy shared her power with girls all over the world but she still feels alone.
Crazy Pink Mohawk Girl, Simone I think, finally pops up again and her want for a gun brings trouble. The idea of rogue Slayers I like. Some girls are going to abuse their power. Giles was right about that point. I would like to see rogue Slayers versus good Slayers because they would both be evenly matched; the only difference would be leadership. Since Joss laid the groundwork for Simone back in the first arc, I like to think this will be a bigger issue and hopefully it'll lead to Buffy and Giles reaching an understanding.
Looks like Andrew will be back for the next arc and that should be fun. Judging from the covers, Xander and Willow will be involved, too. Oh, and Dracula. I remember Georges Jeanty saying he had to watch season five to get the look of a character; he was probably told to take a look at Buffy vs Dracula.
