In Alberta there's this little town called Vulcan. Originally they were named for the Roman god, but someone decided it would be better if they associated themselves with Star Trek and the rest is history. They have an annual Star Trek convention, a replica Enterprise, and funky looking tourist centre. Surprisingly, as someone who has stood in front of the replica Enterprise for a picture, I've never been to Galaxy Fest or been inside the tourist centre.

Now they're trying to convince Paramount to have the premiere of Star Trek XI in Vulcan. Seems logical, right (Sorry, couldn't resist)? They've sent a proposal to Paramount and the Canadian news stations are beginning to provide coverage. My local station just had a piece about Vulcan on the news. Vulcan's own media release is here.

I have to admit this would be enough for me to drive on down to Vulcan. An actual Hollywood premiere, practically in my own backyard. Well, a backyard an hour away, but close by nonetheless. The only potential problem I can think of is the issue of space. Vulcan has a population of 1762 people. I doubt they would have the capacity to hold a big premiere. But with the premiere of Star Trek XI pushed back, the event would be in May, rather than December. Outside screening anyone?

Star Trek was probably the first sci fi thing I was introduced to as a kid. My family and I aren't Trekkers, but man, if this did happen, we'd totally be there in a second.
