locker_monsterEssays suck. Thank goodness for Stargate Atlantis. Yay for distractions and the wasting of time! This was an odd finale. It just felt like... filler.
At least we have the first Stargate SG-1 DVD movie on Tuesday to keep satisfy that Stargate craving. Though, with the story being set before Atlantis season four, we'll be going back in time, not forward. But who cares. :-D
And I don't mean that in a bad way, it's just, nothing happens. We get flashforwards, but they're likely not to happen now because John and Rodney managed to change things. Well, Woolsey still becomes the leader of the expedition next season, but none of the deaths are likely to happen. It just felt like they wanted to keep going with the Michael storyline but for whatever reason wanted to hold off on further development until next season so they came up with sending John to the future. I like trips to the future, really. I was just thinking the other day they don't travel to the future as often as they should. But nothing happened here. A lot of stuff happens off screen or is stated for the benefit of the audience but doesn't really flow with the story.
I think the episode would have been better if we had seen John sort of losing hope of finding Teyla. So that when he travels to the future and after he hears what happens after he disappeared, he's spurned to get back out there. Time travel stories really should have that element; I mean, isn't that the whole point of travelling to the future? To learn what happened and try to fix things before they reach the point where it all goes to hell? It's similar to alternative reality stories.
Aside from that, the glimpses into the future were nice. I suppose by doing it this way you see the team lose and you don't see that too often. Though, slight cheats on all the deaths. Everyone dies, but not really! ;-) Obviously the best glimpse into the future was Rodney's. I didn't expect him and Keller to get together, but the hint was in the dialogue. He kept calling Keller "Jennifer" the whole time, hinting they had become more personal. It'd be interesting to see if they follow this through. Rodney's not seeing Katie anymore it seems and Ronon hasn't shown much interest in returning Keller's affection. The scene at the end of "Trio" had some flirting between Rodney and Keller. It wouldn't hurt to see some of these characters in a happy relationship. We barely had happy couples on SG-1. I also liked that Rodney wanted to change the future not just to save Keller's life but everyone's lives: Sam, Teyla, Ronon, heck, even all the humans in Pegasus. It wasn't solely a selfish reason. Ooh, and we got to see Lorne's first name! Well, the first letter, but it's an "E" so it fits with his name being Evan. The future technology was kind of interesting, holographic chalkboards and what not, but wow, the lamps and coffee pots got ugly. Interestingly, the clothing seemed to be Asian influenced, if the collar on Lorne's uniform was any indication. A tiny nod to Firefly? I like to think so. :-)
I just hate "explosion" endings. So the building they were in blew up. I'm sure there will be a time cut, showing how the boys survive. It's kind of like the finale for season nine over on SG-1. One of the ships exploded, but Cam and Daniel both made it off in time. It seems Atlantis will be premiering in the fall so we'll have to wait, like, 7 months to see how John and the others didn't die. I'm kind of disappointed the Replicator thing from the end of "Be All My Sins Remember'd" wasn't resolved, though it appears the writers didn't really have a choice. No Torri so no resolution. I do hope she does decide to come back at some point. It'd be nice for her to show up for the 100th episode next season. We have to know if that Elizabeth is evil!
