And I thought last week's episode was cracktastic. I can only assume they had to re-write the ending once they heard Atlantis wouldn't be renewed. I suppose that's slightly easier than coming up with a whole new episode, like SG-1 did.
But taking the city to Earth? What?! Atlantis is set in another galaxy for a reason. They didn't want the new team stepping on the toes of the old team so the writers sent the spin-off to another galaxy. By having the city sitting just outside San Francisco (hello Star Trek reference), that's just... I dunno, stupid, crazy. Dialogue suggests the city could make it back to Pegasus and hopefully that's something they pick up in a DVD movie or TV movie. Though, with this way they are consolidating the franchise back on Earth, at least with the finished shows. So maybe they'll keep Atlantis on Earth, but they can still dial the Pegasus galaxy. Because the Wraith are still out there and they just can't abandon the people there. At the same time, SG-1 and Atlantis can have fun crossovers. :-D
Sigh. I mean, it was a fun episode, all in all. They got everyone back that they could: Ellis, Caldwell, Carson, Lorne, heck even Kavanagh. And some familiar SG-1 faces as well. I liked that they wrote in about naming the next Daedalus ship after General Hammond. A nice little nod to Don Davis and Hammond. But bringing people back was really all they could do. That's the problem when your 100th episode is also your series finale. You have to wrap up the show; you can't go all crazy or take time to look back. If you want to get technical, this episode is the 100th to be aired, but 99th to be filmed. "Vegas" was shot last, so it does get to follow in the footsteps of the crazy 100th episode Stargate franchise tradition.
I guess with this ending, you wrap up the show but you don't wrap up the concept. The team didn't kill off all the Wraith nor did they get rid of all their enemies. So there's still trouble to be had. At least this was a team episode; we haven't had one of those in awhile, with everyone running around and saving the day together. Kind of cheap how Ronon "dies". I really thought they might go with a huge character death, but the main characters rarely die in Stargate. Seriously. If you're a main character, you're pretty safe. It's the recurring characters that have to worry. And you get that great shot at the end, with the whole cast staring out at the Golden Gate Bridge. Todd's still alive though, and likely stuck on Earth. Just think of the trouble he could get up to. :-) But they destroyed the Ancient Weapons Platform. I suppose if the city is staying on Earth, it will be able to protect the planet.
I dunno. You can't please everyone. I don't hate the episode, but it's just weird where they decided to take the show. I'd like a TV movie now please. I hear the next SG-1 movie is being written and getting ready for a spring shoot. You could do the same for Atlantis.
Randomly: It's kind of funny how they dance around why certain characters and things aren't there. Oh, General Landry's in Washington and the Odyssey is off on some "secret mission", which is just code for "Yeah, can't have all our ships trying to protect Earth." Though, with incapaciting all the ships, it gave Atlantis the chance to save the day. Cheap that you don't see them using the wormhole drive, but this way you get to see the city rising into frame, which sort of calls back to the premiere, with the city rising out of the ocean. And it seems more and more likely that SG-1 isn't a team anymore. Sam's going to be commanding the Hammond and from Daniel's and Teal'c's appearances on the show they seemed to be moved on as well. Are Cam and Vala still gating to other worlds but with a new team? See, this is why we need another movie now. So many questions.
Okay, so in the end, bringing the team home leaves the show on a happier note. They're back on their planet, well, most of the team is, and they saved the day. That's the show for you. The team's together and their home is safe.
Well, Stargate Atlantis, you had half the life of your parent show, but you still had a good run. Now it's DVD movie time! Yes, a crossover movie if you please. That would be a great way to kick off things.
