Tahmoh wasn't there! *breaks into hysterical sobs*
*takes deep breath*
I don't think I've ever seen that many people attend this con before. It was... wow. When I got there at 10:00, the line was so long it was leading into the other building next to hall where the con was. I was all worried I wouldn't get good seats, but oddly, once my sister and I got past the doors, the room where the BSG panel was was empty. Seems no one had decided to stake out seats beforehand. So we just walked right to the front of the room and planted our butts right in the middle. :-D
Tomorrow's sort of a lacklustre day, none of the media guests are doing panels, but they will be appearing for Ed and Red's mini show. That's right, Ed the Sock.

It was while we were waiting for stuff to start that I noticed there was a lack of Tahmoh's name around the photo-op booth. It didn't really hit me to think he wasn't there until my second foray out into the crowd while waiting and then it was confirmed for me that Tahmoh wasn't coming. He was sick. :-( I heard one of the volunteers say he and the cast and crew on his latest project, I'm assuming Riverworld, all got sick so he couldn't make the flight out. Sounds like food poisoning to me if everyone got sick. Or it's a nasty flu bug. So that was the major disappointment for the day. Nicely though, when I talked with the con people they said they would refund my money or I could transfer the credit to another photo-op. More on that later.

This is what front row looks like. None of this sitting near the back of the room stuff. :-D My sister, her husband, and I had to sit through Ray Park's panel to keep these seats, but I didn't mind.

Ray Park appeared here two years ago and he had impressed me then. I think it's because he has a Scottish accent and pointy hair. :-) He didn't do any awesome lightsabre twirling this time though. Mostly he talked about G.I. Joe, he's playing Snake Eyes, but I'm too young to remember the cartoon so it didn't really matter to me. Naturally he fielded some Star Wars questions as well. Ray also mentioned he wouldn't mind playing Iron Fist if they ever make a movie about him. It struck me he's not really a stunt guy, but more of an action oriented actor, like Jet Li. It's a shame you don't get to see his face more often.
So Ray's panel ended and the three of us were all content to sit there and wait for the BSG panel to start up. Then one of the volunteers starts to announce that we have to clear the room because there's a giant line outside. Wha? But good seats, and Edward James Olmos, and that's not fair! We actually did get up and started to leave when we noticed some other guys weren't leaving. They had actually snagged our nice front and centre seats. After asking another volunteer if we really needed to clear the room, he said no, not really, so we sat back down. I know everyone was there to see Eddie but it didn't seem fair that we had to move when other people didn't have the foresight to sit down to the BSG panel early. Or maybe staking out seats early is a no-no and we committed a serious con going taboo. I don't know.
Oh, an unfortuate side effect of packing in as many people as possible was the rows were really close to the stage this year. Last year, the audience was a good deal away from the actors, but this year, a good couple of strides and I was at the stage. So we had a really good view of Eddie and Kandyse.

That didn't stop me of taking crappy pictures. :-P This was the clearest one I could find that I took. Sigh. I really need to find out the ideal settings on this camera.
But Edward James Olmos! While standing in line, I got the feeling that most people were there to see him. I saw more one day passes then weekend passes. And why would you not want to see Eddie? It's like Picard coming to town. I noticed Eddie referred a lot of the questions to Kandyse first, out of courtesy almost. Like he knew he could carry the whole panel but he wanted to be fair and let Kandyse talk, and that was nice. Oh, and if you hadn't see all of the BSG, boy, did you get spoiled.
So first off, Eddie revealed that Dee is going to be in The Plan, which got a nice cheer. See, in sci fi, you're not dead, you're just absent. One person asked what their thoughts were on the end of the show. Kandyse couldn't really say much, since she didn't quite make it to the end, but Eddie said he didn't get wrapped. There were some scenes left to shoot bewtween Adama and Tigh and he wasn't never called in to do them. Of course they both said they were sad the show ended. And Dee went the way she did because they needed to show the impact of finding not-Earth had on the fleet. Someone else brought up the thing BSG did at the UN and Eddie said it wasn't a show boating kind of thing; it was just a way of getting people to pay attention to the things the UN handles.
Another fan asked if there were any good improv moments on set. Kandyse admitted she didn't have any stories, but Eddie started to talk about "Tigh Me Up, Tigh Me Down", which he directed. Seems during the dinner table scene, Ellen putting her foot up Lee's leg was an improv Eddie suggested to Kate Vernon; Jamie Bamber had no idea she was going to do that. And later with Ellen wrapping her legs around Tigh's head, another suggestion from Eddie. He strikes me as a wicked director. Oh, and he'll be directing some episodes of Caprica, so he's definitely hanging around the fandom. On a side note, Kandyse mentioned she was waiting for her copy of Caprica to arrive from amazon.com. :-D
Someone else asked if the actors could play any other character on the show, which character would they play. Kandyse right away said Tori and that got a bit of a boo from the crowd. She also said she wouldn't have minded playing Starbuck. :-) Eddie went with Tigh and praised what an awesome job Michael Hogan did with the role. Kandyse chimed in that it was fun being able to sneak up on Michael when he had the eye patch on. And I can't remember the exact wording of the question, but someone asked about the ending of the show and how humanity's going on a certain path. Well, whatever the question was, Eddie replied back by making a Star Trek reference! He started joking about humpback whales and needing to save them for their songs. Ha, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home reference for the win. My sister and I couldn't stop laughing at that one.
The panel ended and you could so totally tell that everyone was waiting for Eddie to shout "So Say We All!" No one shouted it out from the audience, but Kandyse was nice enough to bring it up and she shouted it. Naturally everyone shouted back, though only once. I wonder if Eddie gets tired of hearing "So Say We All".
A friend I ran into and I had to run out of the room to head to Jewel's panel but by the time we got there, the room was packed and we have to stand along the wall. A bit annoying, but cool that the room was packed to see Jewel. She mostly talked about Stargate Atlantis and Firefly obviously. She explained the origins of her and Nathan's thing of giving each other the finger whenever possible. She said she's always expecting Nathan to pop out at a convention and give her the finger. The ways they've gotten back at each other have been pretty awesome, but it also sort of messes up things when they see each other. Jewel was visiting Nathan and he handed her a box. She said she started to laugh because she was expecting a middle finger. In actuality, it was the ashes of Nathan's cat. It made me sad to hear that Nathan's cat, Dirty Cat, had passed away. He always had an awesome story to tell about how he got her as a pet.
Oh, and it turns out today is Jewel and her husband Matt's 6th wedding anniversary. Nothing says anniversary like spending time at a sci fi and comic book convention in Alberta.
What else did Jewel talk about? I love how she commented on how polite we all were because people were hesitant to come up to the mic and ask her a question. It's because we're Canadian. Someone asked if she wouldn't mind being on Dollhouse and Jewel was all, yay, that'd be awesome. Seems she's not working on anything at the moment, what with the SGA movie on hold. And she knows Book and Inara's backstories. She didn't tell us of course, but she said Inara's backstory is more tragic than Book's. And apparently David Hewlett sweats a lot when he has to do kissing scenes with Jewel but he still smells nice. :-D And it was funny. Sean Astin's panel was going on in the next room and you could hear the crowd cheering. They were cheering really loud at one point, so we decided to cheer back just as loud. A few minutes later we get an even louder cheer back. Ha, duelling fans.
Jewel had to run out of her panel to do her photo-ops so that meant I had to run out to and get in line. It was a long line, but it moved pretty quickly. You take your picture and you go. I wore my Browncoat t-shirt and my Jayne hat for the photo. I only saw two other people wearing the same shirt and one other Jayne hat. Weird.
So, my useless Tahmoh photo-op. I was a little disappointed I wouldn't be able to meet him, but the option of getting my money back was there. Well, I decided to go for broke and upgraded to a photo-op with both Eddie and Kandyse. Extra $40. Eddie was super nice though. He greeted everyone with a big smile. He actually said during the BSG panel that he was surprised he was attending this con. So his appearance was truly a last minute thing. It wasn't the con knowing they had him and waiting until the last minute to get more money out of people. I decided I didn't want to hang around and wait for my photo-ops to appear, so hopefully I find them tomorrow.
I ended the day by getting Jewel's autograph. Well, autographs. $25 per item. I had her sign my Firefly comic that Joss, Morena, and Christina had already signed and my SGA bag I got at the Stargate con this month. And you were allowed to take photos of her while she was signing your stuff, which was super nice.

But oh man, were my hands shaking when I took this picture. I'm surprised it isn't horribly blurry. My bag was actually a nice conversation piece. Jewel noticed all the signatures I had got and she asked me to point them all out. Turns out she was in Seattle when the Stargate con was on and I got the impression that she probably wouln't have minded appearing if she had been free. I noticed that Jewel's husband was sitting beside her at the autograph table; he looked a little bored, but hey, what can you do when your wife is a big time sci fi fan favourite actor. And I totally did not realize that Jewel was only 19 when she did Firefly. She's not that much older than I am. The things you learn.

Two Firefly actors, and one Firefly guest star and one Firefly creator, down. Seven more to go. Next year I hope Nathan makes an appearance. Because if they can get Edward James Olmos then it's possible they can get someone like Nathan. And he's an Albertan boy to boot. He'd be right at home.
