As much as I love io9.com – it’s my lifeline during my lunch hour (it’s fun to read and work doesn’t think it needs to block the website) – they really need to stop posting spoilers right in the article headline and summary for all to see. Yes, I know, it’s my choice to actually click on the link and read the details, but even just knowing something without the details sends me into a spoilerphobe tizzy. Though, what I consider to be a spoiler and what the average person considers to be a spoiler are radically different, so I can forgive io9.com (sometimes) when they post an article that reveals stuff I normally wouldn’t want to read about.
Naturally, it’s Doctor Who spoilers I want to rant about. But rant in a good way. And more specifically, rant about The Sarah Jane Adventures. You all know what I’m talking about.
In passing on
who_daily I saw they had a link about a Doctor Who character appearing for the third season of The Sarah Jane Adventures. I just assumed it was Mickey and moved on. I mean, who else would it be? Imagine my surprise when io9.com reports that it’s the Doctor who will be appearing on SJA. And not just in a cameo or a flashback either, but an honest to goodness guest spot. Though it remains to be seen if the Doctor will be the real Doctor; there’s always the possibility of a dream or a hallucination. Still, crossover!
But this does sound like one last hurrah. SJA usually airs in September, so the third season will be up, and done, by the time the next Doctor Who special airs in November. So one last chance for Ten to have an adventure with Sarah Jane before he, yes, the dreaded “R” word, regenerates. Heck, K-9 will be appearing this season too, so it’s all the old gang. It makes you wonder if the Doctor is going to show up on Torchwood, too. Or this means Sarah Jane isn’t appearing for David Tennant’s last story so this is the writers making up for that. I really don’t mind, either way. I always love it when different shows in the same universe actually have their characters interact. What is the point of having spin-offs if they don’t expand or impact the parent show?
I hope they integrate the Doctor fully into the SJA episode he’s in. I want him running around with Sarah Jane and stopping aliens, figuring things out with Mr. Smith, and talking with the kids. I mean, who else has been eagerly waiting for a scene between the Doctor and Luke since the season four finale? Or is that just me? :-) It’s never fully explained to the Doctor how Sarah Jane has a son or a talking computer, “Journey’s End” sort of glosses over that, so this is her chance to fill in the blanks.
I managed not to read the details about his appearance, so I don’t know how or why the Doctor is showing up so please don't spoil me. I like to think that David Tennant managed to convince the writers to write him in. I can’t remember on which one, the podcast commentary or the DVD commentary for “The Stolen Earth”, but David kept going on and on in one of them about voicing Mr. Smith during the read-through and joking about how he wouldn’t mind taking over the role. So the first thing I thought of about the Doctor appearing is he’s doing the voice of Mr. Smith! Good way to it actually. David just has to record his voice, so it’s a time saver. And I can just picture the story. The Doctor’s brainwaves somehow get scanned into Mr. Smith so the computer starts thinking, talking, and sounding like him. Plus, it’s permanent so from now on Mr. Smith sounds like the Doctor, thus keeping David around in the Doctor Who universe. What? I could happen. ;-) Anyway, it’s a nice casting coup.
Oh, and the io9.com article also mentioned the new Doctor Who animated adventure and some rumblings about a Doctor Who movie. By Doctor Who movie, I hope they mean like in-a-theatre-released-around-the-world movie, not a DVD movie. Because I would kill to see Doctor Who on the big screen. I would totally just fly to, like, London to watch the movie if it was only released in the UK. I’m excited about the cartoon, though. The last one was pretty decent, though I hope this time around the animation is a little better. In “The Infinite Quest”, the Doctor and Martha had like six facial expressions and they didn’t move around that much.
Hmm, it kind of feels like they’re making up for this year-without-Who. I like it. :-D
