I know Doctor Who has done vampires before, Haemovores they were called (and every one of them needed a manicure), so I was curious to see how they would portray the vampires this time. I never expected this take.
Oh sure, vampires as aliens works, but space fishes in disguise? So they're not really vampires per se, which is fine. It just further proves that Doctor Who and Buffy the Vampire Slayer can share the same universe. ;-) But you got to laugh when they hire the creator of Being Human, who's done his own take on vampires and all things supernatural, and proper vampires aren't even involved. I always find it fun when the show comes up with various ways to explain supernatural things like vampires, werewolves, and witches. In the Doctor's world, everything can be explained by science. Well, a science fiction-y explanation at any rate.
I found the plot this week to be "meh" yet again. I don't know what it is. The plots just aren't impressing me for some reason. Though, next week looks interesting and it seems like its the all important "Companion proves herself to be awesome" episode. The idea the Doctor is responsible for the destruction of an entire race, again, was nice and angsty. I don't think Eleven gave the space fish a warning, did he? Ten totally would have given Rosanna a chance to leave Earth and settle on another planet. Nice contrast. But turning girls into space fish? Huh? And the Doctor just flicks a switch and everything is better? Kind of anti-climatic, that.
Can Rory stick around for the rest of the season please? It was nice seeing a male Companion running around with the Doctor. It switches things up a bit and it's also a different dynamic. Rory responds differently to the Doctor than Amy. He's clearly not impressed by Time Lord awesomeness but he's got enough wits to not totally freak out when the aliens are attacking. He's a lot like Mickey in some respects. The forgotten boyfriend who has to compete with the Doctor. I don't see how they're going to resolve the whole Amy/Doctor/Rory thing though. Rory clearly loves Amy but Amy seems sort of on the fence about being married to Rory. If they call off their marriage, that leaves them in a really bad place. "Let's not get married but still see each other!" Yeah, that doesn't work. It'll be really stupid if Amy does choose the Doctor over Rory. I don't think I could like Amy if she did that. Like everyone was saying last week, the least Amy could have done was tell Rory she was having second thoughts or break off their marriage before snogging the Doctor. At least the Doctor was trying to help in a way. I think the only resolution I'd be happy with is Rory travelling with Amy and the Doctor. It'd be rather cruel of Amy to just toss aside Rory just because a mad man in a box from her childhood popped back into her life.
Random: so, they went to Croatia to film. To double as Venice. What happened to Venice? But I hear the show is getting flack for taking Matt Smith to Venice just to film stuff for the Confidential. Whoops. But this has been another free trip for Karen Gillan. She got to go to Rome in "The Fires of Pompeii" while playing the soothsayer and now she got to go to Croatia. And we got a reference to the first Doctor! Though, I didn't catch what Eleven said when he was looking at the psychic paper. Matt Smith speaks so fast sometimes I can't make out what he's saying. And the Doctor popping out of a cake. Could I get that for my bachelorette party? :-D
I'm going to save the Confidential for tomorrow. See what shenanigans the crew got into this time while aboard. Like, did the TARDIS get held up at the border again?

Date: 2010-05-09 06:49 pm (UTC)If the people are fun in an episode, it will raise a 'meh' plot into really fun viewing. So far in SM's who, with the exception of the 11th Hour, that's been missing, imo.
I do find Rory like Mickey in a lot of ways, but I felt Rose did care for Mickey, and Amy- she's almost a cartoon. I can't tell what she feels for anyone, really. One thing very different about Amy/Rory/Doc and Rose/Mickey/Doc is that the doctor did have feelings of some sort for Rose, but he does not have feelings for Amy. He suggested being her dad in the ruse... that made me laugh. That line shows how he thinks of her. So I'm not sure where any of that will go.

Date: 2010-05-09 10:28 pm (UTC)It sort of feels like Amy just settled on Rory because there was no one else. The thing about Rory, too, is that he's been competing against the Doctor since he was a kid. Amy made him dress up like the Raggedy Doctor. He's been trying to fill that role for her, but he always comes up short.
I didn't think too much about that line, the Doctor suggesting he pose as Amy's dad. Yeah, that does say a lot. :-)
