Well, that's it. 14 continuous years of Stargate has come to an end.
I don't think two years is enough time to get to know a show. I find most shows don't hit their stride until at least the third season. I've been watching some of SG-1 over from the start and it really didn't find its place until almost season four. So SGU was right on the cusp of being really good. I'm sure next season would have been awesome. The writers and the actors would have a real handle on the characters and they would know what kinds of stories would thrill the audience and push the limits.
I think it unfair of some fans to assume SGU was trying to be like Battlestar Galactica. It's hard to have an optimistic view of the world all the time. It was time for a change and the creators went with it. Personally, SGU took the concept of being stranded from home, which Stargate Atlantis did fine, but they really pushed home the separation aspect. Ending up on the other side of the universe isn't always sunshine and puppy dogs. I would have loved to see the crew of the Destiny creating their own culture. Well, actually, they did, didn't they? Whoo, time travel hi-jinks! But their own culture on the ship. We started to see that. The animosity between military and civilian was going away. Heck, they even took in the enemy and worked them into the crew.
I don't think they had to time to re-write the end of the series when the news came they weren't renewed so it was interesting to see two stories: the two parter with the crew meeting their alternate descendants (see, time travel hi-jinks) and this last episode here. "Epilogue", which was a fitting title, gave us a nice "what if" for the crew. So they can't go home. Now what? So you have one happy ending. "Gauntlet", not happy at all, but the potential is there for the show to come back in some shape or form. It was an interesting way to end the show. I like to think that the writers were also commenting on the uncertain future of SGU. It's in stasis until enough time passes and some wonderful plan unfolds. At least they didn't kill everyone. This is Stargate, remember. :-) And it's the geek who's the last one standing!
One can only hope that MGM gets it act together and starts making Stargate movies again. It's not the same an hourly TV show, but it's something.
