Ah, see, this is how you do a good episode. A rollicking adventure and character stuff.
Gah, I don't know where to begin with this episode. I'm getting the feeling that this episode is this season's double bank episode, or, as I like to call them, Doctor-lite episode. The Doctor's pretty much stuck in the TARDIS so that shifts a lot of the focus to Rory. And yay! Rory got to do more than run around corridors! I think this episode highlights the best thing about Rory. He's loyal. He will always come back for Amy and he will do anything to reach her. And we get to see why Amy loves Rory so much, too. She admires who he is, for his heart and not what's on the outside. Aw. That's the strength of the two characters, their devotion to each other.
Because we see Amy give up on the Doctor but I don't think she ever gave up on Rory. She named her Handbot after him, after all. :-) And Old Amy risks collapsing time for the boy she loves. I think it's because Rory's her rock. People leave her. The Doctor left her when she was a little girl and Amy has a whole life in her head where her parents disappeared through a crack in time and space. Abandonment issues; who wouldn't have them after a life like that. But Rory never leaves. He's always there for her, even if that means playing hide and seek without Amy for hours or living through two thousands years of history. It was always Rory for Amy.
Speaking of that scene, I love that scene. Rory's not even in it, just the two Amys, but it sheds light on their relationship. And we got more back story on the two of them! Rory pretended to be in a band and then taught himself how to play the guitar to back up his story? Awesome. And Amy saw through the whole thing, obviously. :-) So does that mean Rory can play the guitar? I know Arthur Darvill can play the piano; who's to say that musical talent doesn't extend to the guitar?
Also, huge love for Rory wanting to save both Amys. It wasn't just about having young Amy back. He couldn't bring himself to "kill" Old Amy. She had every right to exist; it didn't matter to him that she was old. Obviously, we couldn't have two Amys running around, so we get another heartbreaking separation scene involving a wall, or a door in this case. You want heartbreak? Put a barrier between your two characters. Make that barrier solid for more emotion. The scene also shows how strong Amy can be. She gives up her life so her younger self can have the life she never had.
And I'm glad Amy got to be action girl as well. So often the Companion just becomes a walking plot point. They get into trouble so the story can move along and the Doctor can go where he needs to be. Here, Amy doesn't need the Doctor, beyond fixing Two Steam's temporal engines or whatnot. She looked after herself for 36 years and she made a sonic probe. Amy's got a keen mind. It's easy to forget that she's pretty smart, too.
And more yay! points for Rory standing up to the Doctor. You rarely see Companions being cross with the Doctor. For obvious reasons they need to trust him, to get out of trouble and whatnot, but there are times when he does ask too much of them. The Doctor has no qualms about leaving Old Amy behind. Rory can't be as detached. He doesn't want to be the Doctor, deciding who lives and who dies. I wish the scene at the end hadn't been so abrupt. I wanted to see the two of them talking a bit more. What did Rory say to the Doctor once they left Old Amy behind? There's a bit of a time lapse there that can be filled in.
Anyway, I could go on and on about this episode, but here are some random thoughts instead: Huh? The Macarena was Amy's temporal shattering thought? I think it was related to her and Rory's relationship though so that makes sense. I think Rory says something about a first kiss when he sees Amy going through the dance. Now that's a scene I want to see. The Macarena was playing the first time they kissed? Does that mean they were kids when it happened? Tom MacRae's only written two episodes before this one? I totally forgot he wrote the first Cybermen two parter. Seriously, why isn't he writing for Doctor Who more often? Nice touch on Old Amy's fight costume. The fabric padding the helmet is from the shirt she was wearing. And more geek glasses for Rory! I totally want to see guys cosplaying at Rory from this episode. It's easy but distinct, due to the giant magnifying glass he has to carry around. Also, why didn't Rory go all Lone Centurion on the Handbots? He had to use the Mona Lisa to distract one? And I think this episode could have easily been called "Rory's Choice". Oh, and they have a karaoke bar on the TARDIS! Ha, that's going to generate so many fanfics now...
After watching Torchwood's season finale and seeing what a letdown that was, it was nice to watch a really good episode.
