Last ep of The Sarah Jane Adventures = much sadness.
Let's focus on the good. Yay, Luke came back! He's my favourite sort of character. The genius who knows everything and really nothing at the same time. He became more human over time, which is nice, but he's still an oddity due to his smarts and stuff. I find it a little weird that he's suddenly this hip, university student. Just look at how he dresses in this episode compared to the other seasons. Maybe he picked up his new fashion sense from his flatmates. ;-)
Anyway, Luke and Sky. I liked that they didn't hit it off right away. Sky's a little apprehensive about having an older brother and Luke's kind of awkward around her. And that's how siblings should be. They don't always have to get along. And it seemed to me that Sky was a little possessive of Sarah Jane; she didn't want to share with Luke. At the same time, Luke was feeling like he had been replaced. Of course, they work out their issues by the end of the episode. And they were both so cute. They're like superheroes. He's a genius! She's, um, sensitive to electricity? Together they fight crime! Seriously, though, they do make a great team. Luke can get past all the doors and stuff and Sky's too stubborn to let anything get in her way. I also realized they both have crazy mothers. Mrs. Woodworm and Miss Myers. Just imagine if those two of them teamed up.
What was extra cute was Sarah Jane being the mum. "What do you think pays for all this? Taking in washing?" The scene where she presents them with the Serf-board was so funny. It's so every day. The mother trying to impress her kids and the kids will have none of it. I'm bummed we'll never see more of this. I would have loved to see more scenes of them as a family, because Sarah Jane does have a family now and it's not just an extended family. A son and daughter. I bet she never thought in a million years that she'd have kids. I'm surprised her old newspaper friend didn't make a comment about her having children, but of course, he was too busy flirting with her.
Random: Clani. Hee, I see why Gareth Roberts has the honour of writing for both SJA and Doctor Who. Are there Clyde/Rani shippers out there who use that nickname? Luke making a dog whistle that can summon K-9; he totally channelled the Doctor. And no one at Oxford seems to question that Luke has a robot dog that's cataloguing stuff in the library. And I like to think that Sarah Jane has built up an immunity to hypnotism after all these years. I would have been super sad if she fell for Serf's hypno-gaze. And when Sky was making Serf sound "American", I laughed so hard. "You've been watching Toy Story again!" I'm a little bummed that K-9 didn't make an appearance. And Sarah Jane has UNIT business cards? Looks like her call sign was on the card; didn't quite catch what it was. And this is how lame I am: totally didn't catch that Serf is a spoof of Steve Jobs (Serf=Job, duh).
I guess they kind of knew going in that this episode might be the last? Obviously, they tacked on Sarah Jane's monologue at the end, but bringing back Luke strikes me more as a season finale kind of thing. I have to admit it was hard watching this episode knowing it was the last one. The last words on the screen were apt though. The story does go on, even if that story isn't on the TV. What I wouldn't mind seeing is a one-off special to wrap things up. If they do write in Elisabeth Sladen's death, like they did with Nicholas Courtney, they could have the Doctor having a moment with Luke, Rani, Clyde, and Sky. You know, acknowledge how great Sarah Jane was, in universe as well.
I have to admit, if I had to pick between Doctor Who's spin-offs, The Sarah Jane Adventures or Torchwood, I would pick SJA. It was more of a kid's show, but it never descended into crack-y lunacy. It was about fun and having adventures and growing up in an ever changing world and you can't go wrong with that.
