Okay, I'm a week late with this, but that's what I get for going on vacation.
So, Amy and Rory's last episode. At least Karen and Arthur got a trip to New York City out of it. Did they film the whole thing in Manhattan? Any New York fans have any filming tidbits?
Anyway, I totally called Amy and Rory's fate in my last episode review. I guessed they would be sent back in time and die of old age and they did. Though, it was the obvious ending since the Weeping Angels were involved. I mean, sending people back in time is their MO. As Companion good-byes go, this one sucks. It's up there with Donna's departure. The Doctor can never see Amy and Rory again. He can't even pop back to New York to see them living their lives in the past because of some cheap timey-wimey thingy Moffat threw in. But that doesn't mean we'll never see Amy and Rory again. The Doctor just can't visit New York in 1938 or whenever. That doesn't mean he couldn't go see Amy and Rory in another country in the right time period. Who's to say that Amy and Rory stayed in New York City the rest of their lives? So at least there's a slight door for them to come back in a special or something. And I assume River can visit them whenever she wants because of her Vortex Manipulator, so there's that option as well.
I am sad to see the Ponds go. But they went out together, as it should be. Of course Amy wouldn't leave Rory behind. It's funny. I've never really loved Amy. She's a great character, but she's not my favourite. Rory, on the other hand, is, hands down, my favourite male Companion. But Amy and Rory together? I love them as a couple so much. They are so dedicated to each other. Rory was willing to die to stop the Weeping Angels and Amy gave up everything to be with Rory. They also brought a new dymanic to the Doctor/Companion team. I doubt we'll have a married couple again, so the Ponds have their unique place in Doctor Who mythology. But the show must go on...
I have to admit that the Weeping Angels aren't my favourite New Who villain. After Moffat brought them back for a second time, they lost some of their coolness that they had in "Blink". They suddenly had all of these new rules. They are creepy in this episode once more, so I hope in the future Moffat sticks more to their timey-wimey antics rather than ripping out people's throats and climbing out of screens and such. I see why he set the episode in Manhattan. Four words. The Statue of Liberty. It's easy to forget that she's a statue. Though, how did she move from her island to Winter Quay? Wouldn't someone have seen her? Though, my knowledge of Manhattan is somewhat limited, so who knows.
But why did the Angels choose Rory? Shouldn't they have known that he travels with the Doctor? Or have the Angels forgotten the Doctor, too? I mean, any time you go after a friend of the Doctor's, you're just inviting trouble. That bit of the plot felt a bit thin. And Rory was just a walking plot point. He didn't get to do much of anything. That was always my one pet peeve with Rory. He was never treated as a main Companion. He always came secondary to Amy, which is kind of annoying. And I kind of wish this episode was a little longer, but you don't always need to hype up a Companion's departure. Still, Amy's been the longest serving New Who Companion; you'd think she'd get an hour long episode.
Random: Amy with reading glasses. Now Amy cosplayers who wear glasses can wear them with their costume. ;-) And it's interesting that the tombstone read "Amelia Williams", not Amelia Pond. I think, though, Amy signed the divorce papers as "Amy Williams" so maybe she changed her last name after "The God Complex". And Amy lived for five years after Rory died. And doesn't Rory usually carry a flashlight with him? What happened to it? It would have saved him a lot of trouble? ;-) Also, why did he wander into Winter Quay? It's a creepy building; don't go inside! I know Amy and Rory's story is done for now, but it'd be nice to see the Doctor visiting Brian to tell him what happened to his son and daughter-in-law. Or maybe I just need to read through my flist for some fanfic. So many entries to go through... I guess River can still come back even if her parents aren't around, but her time is limited, too. Sucks for the Doctor. His time with all of the Ponds is running out.
Sigh, no more Doctor Who until Christmas. So, Oswin is not the next Companion? Because the quick shot of Jenna Louise Coleman showed her in old timey garb, I think. Of course, Oswin could be visiting a fancy dress party... But I hope the next Companion is from the past. We haven't had that for a very long time.
Good-bye Amy Pond and Rory Williams. It was nice knowing you.

Date: 2012-10-08 11:35 pm (UTC)This whole story really has been Amy's, and she went from being very uncertain about marrying Rory, or committing to anyone and accepting love (they always leave you, etc), then choosing Rory... right to the name change in the end.
He gave his life for her, and risked his life for her, and waited 2000 years, and didn't mind being called Rory Pond. He GAVE of himself completely for her.
She finally did the same for him, and the tombstone showed it with something that simple.
I thought that was good.
The Statue of Liberty walking to Winter Quay (a made up place) sounds ABSURD. I can only assume the Angels DO have some way of moving that enables them to hide from people, and only when caught in direct stare to they freeze. But I admit it was such a cool image I forgave the ridiculousness of it a lot. Also, Moffat appeared to be opening up a new page in the Angel Rulebook-- they 'take over' the statues? The ones in NY were not their natural forms? Another way of reproducing? I dunno.
I think they went after Rory because he smelled like a really really good dinner. He's got all sorts of weird time energy all around him, what with living multiple timelines AND having lived 2000 years. Mmm Mmm Good.
They didn't choose NY for the Statue alone, imo. Remember where child Melody regenerated? New York, 1969. I'm willing to bet Amy and Rory did indeed raise her, and quite possibly she's been programmed not only by the Silents but also by her parents (because after 1969 the Silents were no longer everywhere-- people would kill them-- they might not know Amy and Rory were the 'adoptive' parents of the regenerated River). Why mention River was regenerating in NY? Why pick NY for Amy and Rory to be in when they were zapped back in time? (and 1969? Did they get the same angel the doctor did in Blink? Fans are assuming they were sent back to 1938, but we don't know that).

Date: 2012-10-09 05:02 pm (UTC)Yeah, I found the Angel Liberty pretty ridiculous... it would be one thing if it happened while someone was actually on Liberty island.... or even, maybe, if they were near the shore and the statue came out of the water to grab somebody. Or, heck, I'd even give "a really foggy night" as an excuse (Angels + Fog, now there's a recipe for an episode)... but just waltzing out into the middle of the City that Never Sleeps? And never being seen?
They also seem to have forgotten the whole "they can't even be seen by each other" flaw.
As for 'shouldn't they have known the Doctor'... well, we don't know they've met him. They send other people back in time, but we don't know if they, as a species, are regular time travellers, and this episode took place in 1939, before any of the other times we've seen them meet. So, combined with the whole theme lately of the Doctor doing everything possible to wipe out his legend, I think it's plausible enough they didn't know who they were messing with when they took Rory, one way or the other.
