A/N: A sort of companion piece to this manip I made. Merry Christmas!

As promised, a place had been set at the table for the Doctor. This was his fourth Christmas dinner in recent memory, but his first with the Ponds. He watched with silent delight as Amy and Rory went through all of the preparations. They were a far cry from the young, awkward couple he had met all those years ago.

In short order, the turkey was consumed and the wine was drunk and after a surprisingly good toffee pudding made by Rory, they ended up in the living room, lounging on the sofa, full and content.

"Now that you're here..." said Amy. She got up from the sofa and went over to the Christmas tree in the corner. Underneath it sat one wrapped gift. She picked it up and returned to her spot on the sofa. "Here."

The blue wrapping paper, which reflected the sparkling lights on the tree, was offset by a white ribbon tied into a bow. From just holding it, the Doctor could tell that it concealed a thin square box. He gently shook the gift but it didn't rattle.

"Trust me, that doesn't work," said Rory.

The Doctor fingered the tag attached to the white ribbon tied around the box. In Amy's neat writing was written, "To the Doctor. Love Amy."

He couldn't remember the last time someone had given him a Christmas present.

He pulled at the bow and the smooth satin easily unravelled. He placed it aside before eying the tape holding down the ends of the wrapping paper. The Doctor was tempted to just tear into the wrapping paper, but a part of him wanted to preserve it, too. He settled on prying up the tape at one end with his fingernail so he could slide the box free. The box landed on his lap, feeling like it weighed nothing at all.

"It's like Schrödinger's cat," he said. "The contents of the gift are in a state of quantum flux until I open it. Anything and everything could be inside."

"Yeah yeah, just open the box, Raggedy Man."

Well aware that Amy's patience wasn't limitless, the Doctor lifted the lid of the box. He blinked, trying to comprehend what lay inside.

"It's a bobble hat," said Amy.

It was indeed a knitted hat with a pom-pom on top, but that wasn't all. It was a knitted hat that looked like the top of the TARDIS. The yarn was the same blue colour and the windows and the "Police Public Call Box" sign had been incorporated in the pattern as well. The white pom-pom on top stood in for the lantern atop of the time machine. The Doctor lifted the hat out of the box and he saw that it also had ear flaps with braided tassels attached.

He looked to Amy, seeking an explanation, but it was Rory who answered. "Amy made that."

The Doctor's eyebrows shot up. "Really?"

"Okay, so I took up knitting while you were gone. Some of the other models got me in to it. It gave me something to do between photo shoots."

For the life of him, the Doctor couldn't picture Amy sitting with a pair of knitting needles and a ball of yarn while people around her applied make-up to her face and teased her hair. He turned the hat over a few times, taking in the craftsmanship.

It was actually quite good. The stitching was tight and the lines in "Police Public Call Box" were neat and evenly spaced. The pom-pom formed a perfect sphere. Amy had clearly put a lot of time and effort in to making the hat.

"Well?" asked Amy. As impatient as she sounded, he detected a hint of trepidation, too.

He suddenly saw the hat for what it was. A distraction, yes, but a promise, too. Amy had made the hat in the hopes that the Doctor would reappear in the Ponds' lives some day.

With a grin, the Doctor pulled the hat onto his head. "How does it fit?"

Amy broke out into a broad smile. "It's perfect."

Rory reached into his pocket and pulled out his mobile. "We need a picture of this."

"Wait." Amy got up from the sofa and hurried into the kitchen. The Doctor and Rory exchanged a glance, but when neither of them could come up with an explanation, they both just shrugged.

Amy returned a moment later, two Christmas crackers in either hand. "For you, Mr. Pond." She tossed one to Rory.

The crackers were pulled apart with their usual snap. Amy ignored the toy and went straight for the tissue paper crown. She donned hers, which was pale yellow in colour, and motioned for Rory to do the same. He unfolded his, a bright red one, and stuck it on his head at a rakish angle.

"Merry Christmas, Ponds," said the Doctor as they all scrunched together on the sofa to fit into the photo.

Christmas with family. He couldn't have asked for more.

I was thinking the Doctor's mother would knit something like that for him, but his mother-in-law works just as well. ;-)
