Whoo, new Doctor Who! Better than chocolate eggs for Easter. :-D
This was a weird episode. You have to re-introduce Clara (again), hook the audience again, but still continue the season. And obviously something big is going on.
And there goes Moffat again, making the every day scary, or sort of scary. I'm not afraid of wi-fi now, but it's a valid point he raises. The Internet is everywhere now; you can't escape it. What a perfect way to invade the planet. It's a ready made system that you can exploit. So watch out! Your phone might download your soul into the Internet. ;-) That bit of the plot was all right. Really, you could have had any kind of story; the important bit was the Doctor meeting up with Clara again.
Clara, Clara, Clara. Who are you? She has the same name whenever she is but no memory of her past lives. Faulty Time Lord? An alien in disguise? A plant from the Silence? I was kind of hoping she would be from the past this time. Not the distant past, but from the 1980s. Because her birthday is November 23. It would have been cool to have a Clara that was born in 1963, but with the presence of all that wi-fi, obviously not. Oh well. But she wants to travel, and that's good. Interesting that she tells the Doctor to come back tomorrow. Most people would have just hopped in the TARDIS and not looked back. I liked that.
But the Doctor found her too easily, I think. It's like he didn't even try. Or maybe he did for a really long time and we don't get to see those efforts. But who gave Clara the Doctor's number? She said a woman at the shop. River maybe? Or somebody else? I guess it's all part of the mystery. And the Great Intelligence was back. Wasn't expecting that. Is the Intelligence going to be the villain for the rest of the season? Maybe we'll get to see Yetis!
I really don't have much else to say. So, random: the new TARDIS interior is growing on me. It does have a lower level, which is nice, but it still looks too dark, too dreary. They filmed a lot in London. Must have been crazy trying to film with all of the crowds. Does the cafe where the Doctor and Clara go for breakfast actually exist? Looks like a nice cafe. Clever episode title. "The Bells of Saint John". I was expecting a story involving churches or something. Nope, it's just the TARDIS ringing. The Doctor with a maple leaf! Please tell me that Clara wants to visit Canada. Please!!! I love how they worked in the Shard as the nefarious headquarters of the weird wi-fi people. That thing totally looks ominous. The Doctor's new costume is all right. I don't understand why he chooses the new coat, but I guess he likes to change things up every now and then. Oh, Amy and her books. I guess she did end up becoming a writer.
Hard to say if I'm going to like Clara. The Doctor seems pretty smitten with her. Hopefully her origin isn't too confusing.
And I'm pretty sure everyone's talking about this, but I just wanted to write down some quick thoughts:
David Tennant and Billie Piper, huh? I guess the BBC just bit the bullet and decided to announce it because there was no way they'd be able to keep it a secret. But yay for having a past Doctor show up for the 50th anniversary special! Maybe it'll be like "The Two Doctors"? That I could handle. Two Doctors and two Companions is a good amount. You try to add any more and it might get a little chaotic. And having these two makes the most sense. David Tennant still looks like Ten (is he growing the sideburns right now? He'd better be), so no crazy timey wimey antics on why he looks old and, well, Rose is pretty iconic in that she was the first NuWho Companion. And it's Ten and Rose! I imagine the shippers are going nuts right now.
But which Ten will we get? Ten or his clone? Personally, I want actual Ten and not his clone. Since this is an anniversary special you would want the real Doctor. On the other hand, if Rose is coming back, that leans more towards Ten's clone. And that's not a horrible thought. We will get to catch up with the two of them. But I'm hoping more for a scenario where Eleven and Clara run into past versions of Ten and Rose. And who knows? Maybe this means more past Doctors and Companions are coming back...

Date: 2013-03-31 02:54 am (UTC)I just wanted to see the Doctor kicking around space, as opposed to hearing about it in dialogue. Oh well, they only have so much money so they went with a monastery instead of filming various locations. This is what fanfic is for. :-)

Of the New Who companions, both Rose and Donna refused the first time the Doctor asked them along (though Rose only took a few seconds to change her mind, and Donna changed her mind on her own without the Doctor having to ask again). Mickey too, actually. It seems the Doctor likes those who take a little persuasion. :)

I've seen a lot of people speculating that it might be Rose, back in this universe and working against some threat too large for Eleven to handle alone, sorta like she did in Turn Left. She was originally a shopgirl, after all. It might explain why the BBC stole a bit of the thunder from the episode that was about to air by announcing something about a future episode. Or that could all be a big misdirection. Hmmmm.
Eleven seems to like changing his look more than most of the Doctors. I definitely like the new coat as a coat, though I'm not sure it's really him.

Date: 2013-04-01 12:34 am (UTC)I've seen Martha being floated as the mysterious number giving woman, but Rose makes sense, too. My brain initially went "Sally Sparrow?" for some reason. Hey, she was created by Steven Moffat. :-) Maybe the TARDIS just routed the call because she knew it was important?
The Doctor, in general, seems to have a thing for long coats. I also get that it's sort of a new era for Eleven, so why not change up his costume.
