So I've started watching Being Human, just as a change of pace from Time Lords, and I really wish I had started watching sooner. It's a really good show once you get past the initial concept of a vampire, a werewolf, and a ghost sharing a flat together. Not that the concept itself is lame. The supernatural aspect is a lovely metaphor, but when you sum up the show like that, it sounds like a cheesy comedy for some reason or that the show is trying to bank on the popularity of Twilight.
Being Human obviously reminds me of Buffy and I think that's why I'm enjoying it. The show is all about its characters and telling engaging stories, not glorifying the supernatural as something awesome. Being dead, or undead, or an animal once month comes with its share of problems and these people don't just shrug them off. They deal and they struggle.
And I just love the friendship between George, Mitchell, and Annie. For whatever reason, I wasn't expecting the three of them to be good friends, but that was just another misconception about the show on my part. The show could have gone the typical route and have them not getting along, but they all look out for each other. I just finished the second episode, so maybe this has been shown, but I would love to see how George and Mitchell met and how they became friends. I doubt it was as simple as "I'm a vampire! I'm a werewolf! Let's share a flat together!"
I also enjoy the world the writers have built. There are rules to being a vampire, a werewolf, and a ghost. Though, I'm not sure I agree with Mitchell being able to go out in sunlight. In one episode George says Mitchell has problems going out in sunlight, yet a few scenes later, we see Mitchell outside in broad daylight wearing sunglasses. But I guess it's just easier this way. Same with George's werewolf form. It's so cheesy but coming up with a decent suit or elaborate special effects would cost money. It reminds me of the first time we saw Oz as a werewolf on Buffy. I just want to pet George when he's a werewolf, but then I would probably get ripped to shreds. And it's kind of refreshing, just having a vampire or a werewolf with no special destiny. Mitchell and George are just average guys working as porters.
I'm not sure I get why Syfy is making an American version though. Just import the UK version, people. Americanizing British shows never ends well.
