I AM GROOT!

So I went to an early showing of Guardians of the Galaxy last night. So good. It's clearly part of current storyline going on with Thanos and the Infinity Stones in the Marvel cinematic universe, but it's a good action/sci-fi film, too. I will it admit it's not perfect, though, but it's still good fun.

And my god, it's hilarious. In other Marvel movies, there are moments where you laugh and chuckle, but mostly it's guys beating each other up and explosions. Well, GotG still has that, but you're laughing so much in this movie. That's a hallmark of a James Gunn movie. He treats the genre very seriously, but he finds the funny, too. Actually, I was very much reminded of Joss Whedon throughout. The writing and gags felt very Joss-like. Hell, the movie felt like it was more sci-fi-y, big budget version of Firefly. Rag tag crew thrown into the middle of some galaxy wide badness but they persevere and form a family like unit in the end.

I tried to describe the movie to a co-worker and as I was listing off the characters, I realized what a crazy sounding movie it is.

So, the Guardians of the Galaxy. Not a bunch of a-holes, as the trailers might suggest. ;-)

- Star-Lord: Peter reminds me of Han Solo. You know, the ladies' man character with the swagger and the charm. While he is a bit of a jerk, he's funny, too, and he still has a decent sense of right and wrong. And he saves the planet of Xandar with a dance-off. Yup. Actually, that moment is pretty good. Poor Ronan the Accuser looks so confused. :-D Peter's obsession with his Sony Walkman is also a nice character touch. It's his tie back to Earth and his mother, that and the mix tape in it. He doesn't want to lose that part of himself, his humanity.

-Gamora: Green assassin chick. Kind of Peter's love interest, but they don't kiss in the end, so I appreciate that. I found that she is there mostly to kick butt and to be sexy, but she does butt heads with Peter a lot and she can look after herself. She may start off a villain, but, like Peter, she still knows right from wrong and she doesn't think twice about betraying Ronan and Thanos once she realizes what they want to do with the Infinity Stone. Aside from Nebula and Glenn Close's character, she's the only major female character. Hey, she's not even naked in the film. Peter gets a shirtless scene, though. :-)

-Drax the Destroyer: He actually has a tragic back story, as Ronan murdered his wife and daughter, so he's all about the revenge. He's mostly there to beat things up, but he has a few funny moments.

Rocket Raccoon: I thought maybe a talking raccoon might be lame, but honestly, Rocket steals the show. He speaks his mind, loves his guns, and he's so cute. I just want to pet him. He starts off as a bounty hunter, with Groot as his bodyguard, so they're just in it for the money, but you do see him forming an attachment with the rest of the gang. At the end, when Groot dies (don't worry, he gets better), and Rocket is sadly holding his friend's remains, you just want to scoop him up and hug him.

-Groot: I AM GROOT! Hands down, Groot is the best character. He doesn't say much, but his face is pretty expressive and his big brown eyes are adorable. You think he's this innocent tree, but there's depth to him that you don't expect. And he's pretty funny, too. He does sacrifice himself to save the team, but he is a tree after all and Rocket plants a cutting of Groot in a pot so right at the end you see Groot starting to bud.

The villains are pretty one-note, though. Ronan just wants to destroy Xandar and Thanos just sits in a chair and Nebula just scowls and barks orders. I think Karen Gillan could have saved her hair. Nebula doesn't die, so there is potential for her to come back, which is nice. She and Gamora have their issues, so it'd be a good chance to give both characters more depth. Hopefully if Nebula does come back, Karen won't have to shave her head again.

The one thing that stands out about GotG is the universe. Peter is the only human in sight, so the world is full of colourful aliens and non-human backdrops. You barely get a taste of other worlds in Thor 2, but it's here in full force in this movie. So it's definitely more sci-fi than Iron Man or even Thor, which has a more fantasy feel. I was actually left feeling like this universe would make a very good setting for a TV show. It's quite diverse and thought-out, which is a key part of world building.

Hmm, a Guardians of the Galaxy TV show... I'd go for that. I know they're doing a cartoon, but it won't be the same.

Random: Apparently Nathan Fillion had a cameo, but I think it was a voice cameo, so I didn't notice him. Lloyd Kaufman, James Gunn's mentor, has a cameo, and Stan Lee is in the movie despite him saying he wouldn't be. So, the end credit scene. These things are hit and miss sometimes. It's more in the vein of Iron Man 3's end credit scene in that it doesn't add anything to next movie. So, in this case, you get Howard the Duck. Yes, that's right. Howard the Duck. I don't know if this is a hint that they'll be doing another Howard the Duck movie, but hopefully it's just James Gunn having fun. My god, the Guardians are so like the crew of Firefly. Peter is Mal, Drax is Jayne, Gamora is Zoe, Rocket is Wash, and Groot is, well, I guess he's River. Peter has a pretty sweet costume. I hope people start cosplaying him. I wonder if the kids in the audience were confused by Peter's Walkman and the cassette tape. Such foreign technology for them. I'm actually surprised by how well Peter's Walkman has held up over the 26 years he's been away from Earth. It looked pristine, with no scratches or anything.

So I guess the next Marvel movie is The Avengers: Age of Ultron. That's what? May 2015? Well, I guess we can fill the void with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Agent Carter.

It did have a little bit of a Firefly vibe, didn't it? I liked Rocket a lot more than I expected to, too.

I saw a video where someone did a Firefly trailer in the style of the Guardians of the Galaxy's trailer and it really worked. Rocket's line about having a short life span they gave to Wash for, well, obvious reasons.

The Disney store has a plush Rocket and I am not ashamed to say that I would totally buy one. He's so cute.
