You know the one thing that Moffat does really well? Rhyme and poems. There's the rhyme in "The Beast Below", and then there's the one from "A Good Man Goes to War", and lastly, my favourite, "Thoughts on a Clock" from "The Time of the Doctor". Seriously, that poem does so much with just four lines. So he keeps up his tradition here.
I had no idea what this episode was about going in. Got to love vague titles. :-) Actually, I quite enjoyed this episode. Creepy, atmospheric, and an interesting ending. Small cast, too. It was like they were trying to save money or something. But really good episodes can come out of restrictions.
Because there are no aliens and we only briefly visit the far flung future. The monster of the episode... Well, was there even a monster in the episode? Or was just a deep rooted idea that persists across time and space? Like I said: vague is good. Something that is properly scary is always ill defined. It lurks around the edge of your awareness instead of jumping up into your face. This episode is a bit like "Midnight" in that way.
It took me a bit, but I did figure out that the barn the TARDIS lands in was the barn from "The Day of the Doctor" before it was revealed. That was a nice callback. So now we know why the War Doctor walked all the way into a desert with the Moment. I was not expecting the episode to visit the Doctor's childhood. It's something that's been discussed here and there on the show before, but we've never actually glimpsed his life before he became the Doctor. I get the impression he was in a children's home or something similar? Because the woman mentions "other boys"; maybe that implies the Doctor has brothers. But no, why would he hide out in a barn if the other boys were family? You know what? I don't need to know. The Doctor's lack of a personal background is what makes him so interesting. You think you know everything about him, but there's a large part of himself that he never reveals. This is the closest we'll ever get (I assume). The fact that it's Clara who basically shapes the man he is? Um... sure, why not.
And that's the other cool thing about the Doctor. He is not a man without fear. He's not superhuman. He's been a scared kid like everyone else. Hey, running is his superpower. :-D
Anyway, we finally get to see Clara and Danny's date. So very awkward. Usually, we don't see Clara that flustered so that must mean she really likes Danny. :-) And I assume they eventually get together if Orson Pink mentions how time travel runs in the family and he has Dan the Army Man in his possession. Will Clara eventually leave because she wants to get married and start a family? Well, Jo left to get married so it wouldn't be the first time. I dunno. I want Clara's exit to be cool, but I know there's nothing wrong with mundane. Heck, I think the Doctor would appreciate mundane rather than something really tragic. But it will be nice to see more of Danny. You don't often see a relationship develop on Doctor Who. Amy and Rory were already dating when we met them and we've never seen any of the other New Who Companions on a first date. Clara will have to tell him about the Doctor at some point and that's going to be an interesting conversation.
And I'm surprised the Doctor didn't crash Clara's date, at least, not in an overt way, but it's so awesome that he doesn't. He hides in her bedroom just in case she brings her date home and he doesn't come tearing into the restaurant. That's the thing I'm noticing about Twelve. He may be mean to Clara sometimes but he always concerned about her safety and well-being. He will always ask if she's all right. I'm sure if she went on a date with an absolute jerk, Twelve would swoop in and use time travel to mess with the guy's head.
I'm liking Clara a lot more this season. She has more to do. I just love that she can boss the Doctor around. I need a Clara icon, stat.
Random: How the heck did the Doctor manage to sit on top of the TARDIS? Wouldn't the light be jammed into his back? Or maybe there's more space up there than I realize. And what the heck was up with the sweater he was wearing? The front was full of holes and the collar and sleeves looked a little ragged. The TARDIS is very cluttered in this episodes. There are books and candles and chalkboards all over the place. I like it. Makes it seemed more lived in and the disorganized state of everything suits the Doctor's absentmindedness. Clara's heels. Wow. Poor Jenna Coleman. Running around in stilettos cannot be fun. I love that Clara ignores the Doctor's instructions to return to the TARDIS to go comfort a scared kid. Underwater! The show needs to visit an underwater base again. Recycled spacesuit again! I'm not sure why Orson would be wearing a Sanctuary Base 6 spacesuit, though. Maybe they should have rubbed off the logo. Twelve was quite good with young Rupert/Danny. He was actually patient with him for the most part.
Looks like a heist episode next week. That should be good.
