<--- Closest thing I have to a heist related icon. They're a crew of thieves; kind of works right?
So, a heist episode, eh? I don't think the show has done one of those before, has it?
Of course, in typical Doctor Who fashion, it's not really about a bank heist in the end so it escapes some of the trappings of a heist movie. Helps that we're thrown right in instead of seeing all of the set-up. Well, we do see some of the set-up but in typical Moffat fashion is comes at the end of the story so we learn everything as the characters do. It was not a surprise to learn that the Doctor was the one who organized everything, but I don't understand why he couldn't park the TARDIS closer to the vaults. Why all the running around in the corridors? I understand why he couldn't land in the vault itself, because of the solar storm, but they arrive some time before the storm hits. Why not just land where the 24 locks are, have Psi disable them, and there you go, you're in. Of course, then we wouldn't have an episode. Probably best not to poke at the logic of the story or the whole thing is liable to fall apart...
So the episode was okay, fun to watch, but I felt like it was lacking something. No offense to Steve Thompson, but his episodes really don't have a great track record. Nothing he's written, aside from "The Reichenbach Fall" for Sherlock, has been that great in my mind. It's also interesting that this is the second episode with a co-credit for the writing. Was it planned that way or did Moffat have to come in and punch things up a bit? You can tell they tried to make it visually appealing, with the scene transitions, but mostly it's just corridor acting and duct crawling. Seriously? A high end bank with security out the wazoo has ducts that you can crawl through? Anyway...
The Doctor landing in Clara's flat. Is this becoming a thing now? And how the heck did he manage to fit the TARDIS in her living room? Looked like a really tight squeeze. Clara better check that nothing from her flat accidentally materialized in the TARDIS. But we kind of got a bit more with her and Danny and they seem comfortable enough with each other to kiss each other in public (and at their work place). Looks like next week they'll deal more with the issues of being a time traveller and dating a guy at the same time. It's something that's never really been explored. We sort of had it with Rose, but Jackie and Mickey immediately found out about the Doctor so you never had moments where Rose had to come up with an excuse for where she was. Clara, being a time traveller in her spare time, has a different situation. At least the Doctor lands her back in the right place and time.
Yeah, I don't have much to say about this episode, so... Random thoughts: Fairly small cast. Three major guest stars and a monster. I didn't recognize Keeley Hawes in the next time trailer. Her look was kind of a cross between Miss Foster from "Partners in Crime" and Madame Kavorian. I was kind of hoping they had hired her to play the Rani, but alas, she's just a guest villain. The Teller's holding cell kind of looks like the holding cell for the 456. I almost thought they might be in the episode. Twelve shouting "Shutetty up up up" made me laugh. It's almost a PG Malcolm Tucker-ism. ;-) And Clara did change her shoes! No stilettos, but still shoes with a heel because she's tiny and how else are you going to get Jenna Coleman into the same frame as Peter Capaldi.
I'm actually very interested in next week's episode. Likely this is the episode where Danny gets to the meet the Doctor and he finds out about Clara's double life. But you also have the Doctor intruding into Clara's every day life. I'm sure he gets hired as Coal Hill's caretaker because of aliens and not because he's being nosy, but for Clara that's two sides of her life colliding. I hope there's a reference to "Remembrance of the Daleks", since that's the last time the Doctor was there.
Of course, I'm not going to be home next Saturday as I'll be in Montreal. Here's hoping I have access to a TV with the Space channel.
ETA: And now I'm thinking about crossovers with Firefly where the Serenity crew team up with Twelve and Clara to steal something. Hmm... I've always liked this t-shirt. Maybe there's an idea in there...

Yeah. It's wasn't a waste of one's time, but I wasn't left with profound thoughts, like last week.
