Success! Managed to watch Doctor Who on my phone through Space's app. Guh, how do people do it? The screen is so tiny!

But anyway. I quite enjoyed that episode. Funny but with great personal, character moments. See, this is good sci-fi for me. A good sci-fi plot paired with character development.

So Danny finally meets the Doctor and I'm glad they went the route they did. Sure, it would have been really easy for him to like the Doctor but it's so much better when characters don't get along. And the Doctor and Danny so don't get along. And while they both have their reasons, I wonder if it's also because they are a lot alike. I don't think Danny got into soldiering because he liked it; he wanted to help people. I mean, just look at him stressing how he dug 23 wells in "Listen". So, like with Robin Hood, the two of them get off on the wrong foot. I hope this goes on for a bit; I want to see Danny's evolution. He may not end up liking the Doctor but he can respect him. And how right did he looking hanging out with Clara and the Doctor in the TARDIS? Hell, when he ran off with Clara in the middle of parents' night to go talk to the Doctor about the Skovox Blizter, it was so two Companions running off, not a Companion and her boyfriend. I want Danny to have one proper trip in the TARDIS. Please! Danny and Clara are so the 21st century equivalent of Ian and Barbara.

Oh, and one more thing for the wish list. They better mention Danny next episode. I hate it when shows sweep a major development under the rug. I want one snooty comment from the Doctor about Danny or something, just so there’s some continuity.

This was a great episode for Clara, too. You don’t often see the Companion trying to balance her normal life with her time travel with the Doctor. We had a little bit with Amy and Rory near the end of their run, but Clara is forced to keep more secrets (which bites her in the bum this episode). And we’ve never seen the Doctor crash the Companion’s normal life. Clara keeps both halves of herself pretty separate. I wish we got more of her trying to teach while the Doctor ran around Coal Hill. He’s there for two days, I think. I think it would have been funnier if he had hung around for a few days trying to catch the Skovox. It also would have been a balancing act for the Doctor. He’s trying to investigate but kids and teachers keep coming to bug him to fix things and clean things. Oh well, that’s why we have fanfic. :-)

But I’m getting off topic. Will Clara have to choose at some point? Danny and teaching or the Doctor and time travel? She shouldn’t have to choice, but Danny sort of gives her an ultimatum. I can see why Danny would be upset, though. But Clara handles her two boys well. She doesn’t dismiss either of them. She and Danny have a proper talk and she doesn’t ignore the Doctor when he needs her help. I just want all three of them in the TARDIS as one big happy time travelling family. Please, can we have that before Clara leaves the show?

Oh, and Clara loves Danny. No reaction from Danny, though, so I wonder if they’ve professed their love to each other before this.

And the Doctor. Something for everyone in this episode. The Skovox totally lands near Coal Hill because of him. He’s not just cleaning up the school; he’s cleaning up his mistake, too. I still don’t get why he lures the robot into the school. Oh sure, it’s easy for him to place those thingys while posing as the caretaker and he does his plan after hours, but it’s a school! Were there no other abandoned buildings nearby? And him not telling Clara does seem a little rude, but maybe he didn’t want to distract her. Though, just popping up as the caretaker wasn’t exactly helpful either. ;-) But wow, he is so close-minded about Danny in this episode. He can’t wrap his head around the fact that a soldier can be a maths teacher or that Clara would choose a soldier. But he doesn’t say to Clara to leave the TARDIS because of Danny, so he’s dealing with her life choices. Maybe they’ll explore the rivalry between the Doctor and Danny. It was kind of there with Eleven and Rory but it didn’t hang around for too long.

Even from the preview, I got a Sarah Jane Adventures vibe from this episode. It was probably the school setting. But this totally could have been an episode of the SJA. I wonder if the show was still on that this could have been a plot to get Peter Capaldi on the show, like David Tennant and Matt Smith before him. Can’t you see it now? Sky’s at school and there’s this new caretaker at school who’s kind of weird, so she tells Sarah Jane. And while Sarah Jane is investigating, she runs into the Skovox Blizter and that’s when the Doctor shows up. The whole bit during parents’ night would stay because of course you need an alien robot running around when the school is full of kids and parents and teachers. Actually, this is like an episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, “School Hard”. Ha, they’re stealing from Buffy. ;-)

And Heaven makes a reappearance. Missy now employs a male receptionist. I hope they’re not hinting that Clara ends up dying and popping up in Heaven. It seems people who end up in Heaven end up there because of the Doctor. Oh god, will Clara and Danny die? That would be one way to write them both out. I still don’t get what’s going on with Missy. Is she cataloguing the Doctor’s mistakes?

Random: Oh my god, I laughed so hard when the Doctor thought that Adrian was Clara’s boyfriend. Yes, he’s got floppy hair and a bow tie; he must be Clara’s type. LOL. The Doctor thinks he’s got it all figured out, and that made me laugh even harder. I can’t decide if he was smiling because he was happy for Clara or if he was grinning to himself because he was thinking his last self was pretty good looking. Fish people! Did the Doctor take Clara to Atlantis? The Doctor is miffed that Clara has more than one coat. Clearly, since he has one coat, everyone else should only have one coat. The head of the Skovox Blizter still looks like a turian from Mass Effect to me. What does Courtney keep saying to Clara? “Ozzie loves Squadie?” I’m sorry, the sound wasn’t the greatest on my phone (and tiny screen). Danny’s acrobatics at the end was a bit weird. Yes, he’s a solider; he totally knows how to doing a back flip. Again with the co-credit. I think it’s because Moffat comes up with the idea and then the other writer runs with it. This kind of felt like “The Lodger” to me so I can see why Gareth Roberts wrote it. “I lived a month with otters…” Oh Doctor. But he mentioned River! I have Clara’s shirt, the one with the black diamonds! New cosplay!

Alas, no mention of Ian and Barbara. No quick comment from the Doctor, like “I knew some teachers from here once” or “My granddaughter went here.” They missed a grand opportunity.

ETA: I forgot about Danny's line "He's your... space dad." OMG, that was hilarious. As was the Doctor's follow up about him and Clara looking like they were the same age. I think the Doctor is a little... um, is it wrong to say "possessive" of Clara? She means a lot to him, especially to Twelve as he went through a difficult regeneration with her. I think possessive is the wrong word but I can't think of another right now. Um, it's like she's his best friend and no one else's. Ugh, being articulate is hard.

I need to watch this episode again, preferably on a bigger screen and with subtitles.

Yeah, I think she says "Ozzie loves Squaddie"... Squaddie I believe is slang for soldier (short for squadron), so basically it's saying "Clara Oswald loves the soldier".

I'm surprised they snuck a new companion in under our noses, what with Courtney (and I may be mistaken, but I think she's in the next ep trailer too)

Oh, okay. That makes sense. I was too lazy to grab my headphones so I didn't quite catch everything.

I don't know about Courtney as a Companion. She's a rebel like the Doctor but I have a hard time seeing Twelve dealing with a teenager on a weekly basis. But I wouldn't put it past Moffat to be sneaky.

Well, I wouldn't be surprised if she's not meant to be a permanent companion, but the Who-history fan in me loves all the companions, even the ones that just come along for an episode or two and then decide it's not for them (or die). Maybe that would be a better reason for Clara to eventually leave rather than just being "in love"... if the Doctor got one of the students killed (not intentionally, but just by bringing her along), that could really sour both of them on him. And would sort of fit in with the 'soldier'/'officer' thing - he sent a kid off to die. (I think the Doctor's disdain of soldiers is really all just self-loathing, of course). Bit dark, though, so I doubt they'll do it.

Anyway, if Danny and Clara are Ian and Barbara stand-ins, that means they need a teenage girl to be a surrogate Susan, right? ;)

I actually could see Twelve with a teenager, in a sort of Seven/Ace type relationship... and personally I thought I saw the Doctor's eyes light up when she introduced herself as a disruptive influence, like, "hey, here's someone probably worth knowing!" :)

Ha, very true!

That'd be an interesting route to take. I don't think a Companion ever left because he or she lost faith in the Doctor. Maybe Tegan comes close, as she left because it wasn't fun anymore. I just want Clara's exit to be thought out and not wrapped up in some timey-wimey thing that made no sense, like Amy and Rory's exit.

I spent so much time being annoyed at the Doctor this episode. He was just so mean to and about Danny, especially over the 'you ruined my devices plan' which of course he did - who in their right mind puts things all over a school and doesn't think people might get suspicious and try to sort it out?

It reminded me a bit of Nine and his feelings about Mickey, but then Danny got all snarky and nasty back which was good. Still, the whole relationship between the two is making me very uncomfortable. Clara's really got her work cut out with those two!

Yeah, the Doctor's plan wasn't the most thought out. He had a good general idea but he really hadn't worked out the finer details. But it shows a good detail about Danny. He saw something out of place and immediately tried to fix it.

I do get a Nine vs. Mickey vibe, too. But Danny can take it out and dish it out, which was very amusing to watch. He's not going to take any of the Doctor's guff. And Clara is more than capable of keeping her boys in line. :-D

“You never let me get away with anything! I had a teacher like you once." <=reference. :)

Ha, I remember that line but I took a more literal approach to it, in that I thought the Doctor was talking about Borusa. But it would apply to Barbara or Ian, too.
