One thing else that makes me happy. CBC is showing Smith and Jones on Monday. I can watch the episodes on a TV now. :-D Sort of makes up for the fact that the CBC postponed the second half of series two for hockey. But they still haven't shown The Runaway Bride. At least they're showing Torchwood in the fall.
I was all ready to squee about the return of Jack, but instead they did something else. They brought back the frickin' Master! And he's played by John Simm! I totally was not expecting that. For now, I'll completely overlook the fact that the Master was last seen in the Doctor Who TV movie, getting sucked into the Eye of Harmony. Getting out of dead end situations seems to be a talent of the Master. Though, on the old series they rarely explained how the Master got out of those situations... I do hope Russell T Davies doesn't fall into that trap, but of course, most of the audience watching new Who doesn't know who the Master is, aside from the fact that he's a Time Lord as well. And he's played by John Simm! Have I mentioned how awesome an actor he is? He was just wonderful on Life on Mars. He gets to play a villain now; it looks like he's having fun. The one scene with him as regenerated Master just made me squee with fan girl delight. Plus, we've never seen the Master like that. He was never fun, just scheming. Oh, I hope this means RTD will bring back the Master every once and awhile like they did on old Who. Just not too often. Apparently they did that during the Third Doctor's era and it started to get annoying.
I also want to say I was theorizing that Saxon was the Master, but I can't remember if I mentioned that to anyone so I really can't prove it. :-)
Anyway, back to the other awesome part of the episode: Jack! RTD seems to have totally ignored Torchwood continuity though. Jack was in the Hub when he heard the TARDIS arrive. The part about the Doctor's hand glowing is right, but in the finale, we heard the TARDIS, Jack smiled, and when Gwen walked back into the room he was gone. I suppose Jack would have had enough time grab the hand and a bag and go running upstairs, but that doesn't explain the TARDIS materialization effect down in the Hub. That was the only thing that bothered me. At least they explained how Jack was in Lahore in 1909 and how he met Estelle during World War II. I never would have expected that he ended up in the 1800s and had to live through so much to get back to the Doctor.
I'm not sure I like the reason why the Doctor left Jack behind though. Okay, so Jack is wrong, with the not dying and all, but just because he doesn't age or die means the Doctor has to run away? Though, with the Doctor's line, "That's why I ran away from you", it sort of sounds like a cheesy drama. ;-) However, much love for the conversation they had while Jack was fixing the couplings. They talked about Rose, and the Doctor got to be emo, and Jack mentioned he went to visit Rose while she was growing up. I also liked that Martha was listening in on that conversation. She gets an eye roll at the beginning of the episode when she finds out Rose was a blonde, but I think now she can understand why the Doctor is so hung up on Rose. It was never explained to Martha who Rose was or what she meant to the Doctor. I think now Martha can get over her Rose envy.
Man, I still cannot get over that they brought back the Master. And the finale's next week! I can't believe we're almost done.
