who_contest's "Round" challenge.
"Doctor?" Amy peered through the glass floor of the console room, trying to make out what the Doctor was doing. He sat in the hanging seat hooked to the underside of the floor and he seemed to be hunched over something that rested on his lap. Was it wire? No, wait, it was string...
"Is that yarn?" Rory wondered as he stared down at the Time Lord, equally perplexed.
Rory was right. It was yarn. A blue ball of it sat on the Doctor's lap and a long strand from one end was tangled around the Doctor's fingers, like he was trying to play a game of cat's cradle. The pair of knitting needles in his hand moved at a steady rhythm with a slight clicking sound as he worked the yarn.
Amy wasn't sure if she should laugh or groan. "Why are you knitting?"
The Doctor finally looked up, giving her a first glimpse of what he was working on. To Amy, it looked like a colourful pile of messy knots. "It's a hobby," he declared happily. "I have a hobby now. Hobbies are cool."
"I thought saving the universe was your hobby," said Amy.
"I need something else to do when the two of you are being boring." The Doctor continued to knit as they talked, hardly glancing down at the needles. Amy had to wonder if that was why the whatever the Doctor was knitting looked so lumpy.
"You mean sleeping?" asked Rory.
"Exactly, boring." A few more clicks seemed to sound the end of the Doctor's knitting project and he held it up for Amy and Rory to see. "Well?" He smiled hopefully at them.
It was a round blue lump as far as Amy was concerned; she wasn't sure what it was supposed to be. She looked to Rory, hoping he would have better luck at guessing what it was.
Her husband gave a slight shrug of his shoulders. "Um, it's a very nice... tea cozy?"
"Tea cozy?!" With a slight harrumph, the Doctor tugged the blue lump onto his head before leaping out of his seat. He charged up the stairs to the console, waving his hands animatedly as he talked. "Since neither of you can see the value of a finely knitted hat, I'm taking us to see the Knitting Matrons of Zimmerman Three. Maybe then you'll have some appreciation for the craft."
Amy let out a long sigh. "You are not going out with that thing on your head."
"At least it's not a fez?" offered Rory.
