I actually considered buying Buffy #6 while I was on vacation. Then I decided that was too obsessive. :-) But it's still a good issue, even if read a few days late.
And this must be mentioned. The Doctor and Rose make a cameo near the end of the comic. Whoever put that in wins. The two shows totally exist in the same universe. It's canon now! :-D Don't believe me? Here's the panel. Totally recognizable for any Doctor Who fan. Buffy/Doctor Who crossovers aren't so far-fetched now. ;-)
It's good to see Faith. She wasn't mentioned when Andrew showed up on Angel and even if her location had been revealed it probably would have been a lie anyway, so it's nice to know what she's been up to. It would make sense that some Slayers are keeping an eye on the Hellmouth in Cleavland. Though, from the dialogue it seems like Faith has separated herself from the contingent Robin is leading and hasn't seen Buffy and the others since Sunnydale. I had naturally assumed that she would be helping Buffy to train Slayers. The two of them were getting along well enough. I'm hopefully that Brian K Vaughn will reveal why Faith has decided to isolate herself. It's not just a matter of her being unable to travel due to her status as a fugitive. A little magick could solve that.
And whoo hoo! Giles! :-D His presence has been sadly lacking in the past five issues. Now it seems like he'll play a sizable role in Faith's arc. But not just playing a Professor Higgins role I hope. I really want to know what Giles has been up to since Sunnydale. It's confirmed that he's basically the Watchers Council. Everything they did he now has to look after: managing the Slayer(s), researching, diplomacy, even the wet works. Giles does say he was willing to take out the rogue Slayer with a rifle if that was possible. It's interesting that he doesn't pass on these roles to some of the Slayers. Makes me wonder if he doesn't want to rebuild the Council. Plus, from what Xander said, it seems like Giles doesn't keep in touch with Buffy all that much. Xander doesn't seem concerned that they haven't heard from Giles in a few weeks. Obviously Giles is keeping things from the others. They think he's busy being usual Book Guy. Can we please get a glimpse of what Giles has been through for the past few months? Please?
Faith and Giles working together is also a nice plot idea. The two of them rarely interacted on the show; I don't think they ever had a scene to themselves. Which is odd, considering how much the two of them have in common. Giles understands how serious it is to take a human life but he's managed to make amends. Faith is still trying. I liked that BKV worked in Eyghon and it's the thing that convinces Faith to take on her fancy training. Points also for making the rogue Slayer some British dandy. Poor Faith has to dress up in gowns and fake her way through high society. I suppose the arc will also compare the haves with the have nots. A girl who has everything decides to root for evil compared to a girl who has nothing but still tries to do the right thing.
I got into Brian K Vaughn while reading Runaways and he's a great choice to write for the Buffy comic. His writing style is so similar to Joss' that he neatly fits into this universe. I find it funny that Brian is writing for Buffy while Joss has taken over writing duties for Runaways. I wonder how that conversation went. "Hey Brian. I'm taking over the beloved comic you created. Want to write for the comic version of the beloved show I created?"
Some of the art wasn't that great this issue. I can accept that the art doesn't have to resemble the actors completely but could some effort be made to ensure the essence of the character is there. Sure it's funny to see Giles in a Yellow Submarine sweater, but he looks so dumpy. Faith could use a little work, too. I actually wouldn't mind seeing some out there art, like, slightly cartoonish. With the previous Buffy comics they had one artist who did covers and it was vaguely anime-ish but it was different.

Date: 2007-09-10 07:36 am (UTC)I really need to read this comic. I need to actually finish Buffy Season 7 first, though ...

Date: 2007-09-10 02:18 pm (UTC)The only problem with reading the comics is that they come out monthly, so no weekly episodes. However, they are worth checking out once you finish season seven. The writers aren't burdened with a budget now so they can do bigger and better things. :-)
