locker_monsterIt's my general policy not to read anything that might spoil upcoming plot details for the things I like so I'm usually behind on the news. Like Buffy season eight being set a year and a half, at least, after "Chosen". It appears Joss mentioned this in an interview. It totally blows my mind. A year and a half. That's a long time to be away. So much can happen in a year. So it means Joss and Co One and a Half Year Later-ed. :-D Sorry, doing a One Year Later seems to happen so often it's practically become a verb. DC comics did it, and so did Battlestar Galactica and Doctor Who.
I can't access the interview so I don't know if Joss gave a reason. Maybe he wanted to distance the events happening in the comics from the going-ons over on Angel. I mean, if the comics are set a year into the future you don't have to worry about making sure events line up between the two universes. Because references were made to Buffy more than a few times on Angel. Whatever the reason, it explains so much of what's happening. It would have been nice if one of the characters had mentioned it's been over a year since "Chosen" though. But anyway, a year and a half later explains:
Of course, there is no evidence of a jump forward anywhere in the comic. I can't recall if the gang has been making references to things beyond 2003. I just thought Joss had got his numbers mixed up again. Now this puts a totally different spin on things.

- How organized Buffy and the other Slayers are. I had naturally assumed that only three months had passed since "Chosen", not enough time for the gang to find all the girls and set up the different contingents. But now it appears they've been operating for awhile now.
- Joss' apparently canceling out of things said by Andrew on Angel. If it's a year later, all the stuff Andrew mentioned can still be true. It's possible that a year ago Willow and Kennedy were in Sao Paulo, Xander was in Africa, and Dawn and Buffy were in Rome. Actually, Buffy in Rome was probably the decoy, but it still can fit. The gang has obviously moved on from whatever they were doing before so it just feels like Joss did a retcon.
- The lack of contact between the gang. I assume everyone has been moving around, trying to find Slayers and whatnot. Plus, things obviously happened in that year. It would explain why Xander doesn't want people calling him a Watcher, why Giles is off by himself, plotting to kill evil Slayers, and why Faith is alone and hostile to Robin. Things were said or done and we're just seeing the consequences.
- Giles saying, "I used to be a Watcher." The Watchers Council was mentioned on Angel in "Lineage". Sure it turned out that Wes' dad was an impostor cyborg, but the Council could have sent it. It was said some of the old Watchers were getting together to rebuild the Council. Maybe their plans didn't mesh with what Giles had in mind so he gave up his status at Watcher. He still assists Buffy and teaches the girls about their heritage but he's officially not a Watcher anymore. Would also add further meaning to Xander's constant insistence that he not be called a Watcher. The Council did something unforgivable and he doesn't want to be associated with that.
- Why the army is just noticing the Slayers as a threat. It takes time to organize so I assume that's why the army guys are just finding out about the Slayers now. Buffy and the others have been making their presence known.
Though, the year later doesn't explain why the army and their scientists are still examining the crater that was Sunnydale. You'd think they would have learned everything they needed to know by now. Also, that means Amy and Warren were stuck under the rubble for over a year. They look pretty good for having gone without water and food for 365 days. I suppose Amy could have put herself and Warren in stasis and the army finally woke them up.
