Okay, I felt better today and ventured out to see Cloverfield with
beachkid . I hadn't really followed all the hype; occasionally I checked out cloverfieldclues.com but that was it. I doubt if I had followed everything it would have made the movie watching experience any more exciting.
But first off, the real reason I went to see Cloverfield, y'know besides wanting to see it so I wouldn't have to hear any people talk about it and be spoiled: the Star Trek movie teaser trailer. And when I say teaser, I mean teaser. You see nothing. I know teaser trailers usually don't tell you the plot, but some footage would have been nice. I guess they're still in the middle of filming and have nothing to show. Needless to say, I was disappointed. You see guys building the Enterprise, some old audio clips about space, and then Leonard Nimoy says "Space, the final frontier". And for some stupid reason, they're building the Enterprise on a planet. I'm not a hard core Trek fan, but I know enough that Starfleet ships are built in space. But anyway...
Well, good for Drew Goddard on writing a big, hyped up movie anyway. I hope this leads to more success for him.

Cloverfield. I hate movies with hype; I usually avoid them. I'm not a big J.J. Abrams fan, and I totally think the Star Trek producers picked him just because he's so hip and in right now, but the movie was written by Drew Goddard so I figured it had to be good. Rob and his friends certainly come across as people you can care for and I enjoyed that. They are average people who are naturally freaking out about a monster rampaging through New York City.
The monster was sort of a let down. Ooh, it has two bendable arms and a tail. The first time you glimpse its head, I totally thought it looked like a snapping turtle. But that's the problem with movies that have hype. There's all this secrecy and it's never matches what you expect. The glimpses of the monster worked better than the full blown shot of it at the end. I dunno. This film is gonna make a lot of money and I bet there will be more to come. Maybe a second movie would explain where this thing came from. I just naturally assumed it was some sea creature that's mutated because of some company. I read enough stuff on cloverfieldclues.com to know a Japanese company is part of some big conspiracy. Apparently you can see something crash into the ocean at the end; I didn't see it but
beachkid did. I hope it doesn't mean the monster is an alien from space. Most people are suggesting it was just a piece of a satellite from the Japanese company that hit the water and woke up the monster, like Godzilla or something.
The movie theatre had a warning about the shaky camera work but it wasn't as bad as I thought. Everything is so dark though; it was hard to make out stuff. This is definitely a movie you need to re-watch on DVD with the pause button. I found it slightly odd that no one says to Hud during the whole movie, "Put down the damn camera!" I mean, when Rob and the others are climbing over the roof to get to Beth's apartment, Hud is holding the camera for the whole time. Isn't that kind of dangerous? I would totally want both of my hands free if I were trying to cross from one building to another. And did anyone else think Hud's name was on purpose? HUD stands for Head's Up Display and Hud is basically our eyes and ears for this movie.
Oh, and apparently there's some static at the end of the credits that when played backwards it says, "It's still alive." Actually, why am I saying "apparently"? There's a link on a Cloverfield livejournal site to the sound byte and you can clearly hear, "It's still alive." Is that the second movie right there? The monster did flak off those smaller creatures and one assumes Lily might have made it out of the city.

Date: 2008-01-21 10:38 pm (UTC)Hehe. I enjoyed it. I didn't really read much unless it was on a site I went to. I went to some sites around the time Transformers came out, but I didn't even know about cloverfieldclues.com hehe.
I have no doubt he aleady knows what he wants to do for a sequel. I will definitely watch it again on DVD when it comes out. I ate right before so I was feeling a bit meh afterwards. Nothing a nap didn't fix though! ;)

Date: 2008-01-21 10:54 pm (UTC)I got the website wrong for Cloverfield Clues. It's actually http://cloverfieldclues.blogspot.com/. Good site, though. It has all the viral marketing stuff.
My friend brought some Gravol along so we were able to stuff our faces with popcorn without any ill effects. :-) I foresee Cloverfield becoming like the Godzilla movies. The monster, or a variation of it, will just keep coming back for more.

Date: 2008-01-21 11:53 pm (UTC)Oh...ya. Thank goodness for the geeks. Because backwards? I never would have thought of that. Heh.
Popcorn was so appealing but we had just had lunch. Gravol was probably helpful.

Date: 2008-01-22 12:11 am (UTC)I know backwards stuff has appeared on Lost. Maybe it's a J.J. Abrams thing? I'm just amused that now people can take out their cellphones and do stuff like record audio and take a picture while at a movie.
