Geek Resurrection Month continues! Like I said previously, this month, and for the next two months, all three Joss Whedon shows are back and in the comics. Whoo!
I've gotten behind on my comic book thoughts. Buffy #12 is up first mainly because it's been a year since the series was turned into a comic and I totally didn't realize it. You'd think that after spending $3.50 a month I would be keeping a better track of these things. A year. It doesn't feel like it. I can't even remember what I was doing a year ago. Well, besides going to university. I take it as a good sign that I didn't recall it's been a year. After complaining that these stories can't come fast enough it seems I've become used to seeing a story a month.
And hurray for more new Firefly! It's not the same as having the show back or a new movie, but it works just as well.
I'm just slightly confused on when this comic is set. It's clearly before the movie and before "Those Left Behind". But it's not clear how far after the show "Better Days" is set. The crew has the new mule but Inara and Book are still on board. I assume either Inara hasn't told the crew yet she's leaving or this is just part of the long run around Mal did before dropping Inara off at the Training House.
Next issue looks exciting. And I've said it before, but I'm loving the covers. First, I only have to buy one, and second, it makes a pretty picture of the crew together.

I wasn't up on my news so the controversy of this issue didn't hit me until I had opened the comic and was reading it on the train. Not exactly the best place to be reading this issue. Two naked girls in bed; honest, it's not porn. ;-) The scene caught me off guard, but it got more of a giggle than a groan from me. Big deal if Buffy slept with Satsu. It's clear that Buffy is lonely (and horny; that was established back in issue #1) and it seems that Satsu is okay with the fact that Buffy doesn't love her back. The only issue I see occurring from this is Buffy thinking to herself, "Did I take advantage of Satsu?" Sure, it'll be a bit awkward with the gang, but it shouldn't matter. Sexuality doesn't have to be inflexible. That's the thing I appreciate about the new Doctor Who and Torchwood. You can be attracted to either sex just as powerfully. If anything, Buffy has learned that she needs to lock her door. ;-)
It's great to see Andrew again. I can't help but think Drew Goddard has a soft spot for Andrew. Didn't they say on the show that when they needed to dress Andrew in some different clothes he ended up in the style of clothes Drew usually wore? I am curious to see what he's been up to since "Chosen". It seems he's not a Watcher so his role will have to be clarified. And check it out, Dracula's back, too. I remember a short story Drew did for "Tales of the Vampires" and it was set after "Chosen" and it involved Dracula and Xander as his manservant. I hope that means Drew's previous story is canon then. We've also got blooming romance between Xander and Renee. I wonder if he'll mention Anya as they get closer.
The plot involving those Japanese vampires stealing the scythe should be interesting. I suppose if the scythe can be used to activate all the Potential Slayers it can also be used to deactivate them. Plus the gang will get to go to Japan. They definitely couldn't do that on the show. And the last part of this arc should be super interesting if the cover for #16 is any indication.

I wish this miniseries was longer than three issues. There's only so much you can pack in. But it'll be nice to see the crew spending their hard-earned earnings. Maybe this will explain why Serenity looked so much nicer in the movie; Kaylee used the money to make some upgrades. :-D I was totally duped into thinking the crew would get rich off the paintings they were stealing, not by stealing the high tech police vehicle. Me thinks the guy talking about the vehicle will come back and spoil the crew's money spending. Got to have some danger in the storyline.
Character wise, not much seems to happen that we already don't know. Kaylee's still pining after Simon but we all know how that will end. :-) And then there was that panel. This is the second time I've been reading a Joss Whedon comic on the train and two naked people in a bed pop up. My first thought was, "Wow, Mal's pretty muscular," then "Whoa!" and then "Oh, it's not real." But it shows Inara's thinking about Mal while she's with a client. It's interesting that Inara's client mentions "Dust Devils". The concept was mentioned in the Serenity Visual Companion in one of Joss' memos. Seems it's canon now. I wonder if that will play out.
The one thing I didn't like about the comic was that they use traditional characters for the Chinese. Three years of studying Chinese and all I could read was "xiǎo mèimei" when Wash is talking to Kaylee on the roof of the monastery. Okay, it seems doubtful I could have read anything else, but it would have been nice to read characters that were recognizable at least. Chinese has been undergoing simplification since the 1950s. It would seem logical for the people involved with the comics to use simplified characters. But that's just me I guess.

Date: 2008-03-14 02:24 pm (UTC)So far, I'm liking this one better than Those Left Behind. Hopefully it will continue to be!
Not exactly sure when it's set either... Perhaps we'll find out through things said in the next two issues.. or maybe not, who knows? ;o) Either way, I'm happy to see new Firefly!

Date: 2008-03-14 09:12 pm (UTC)I think I'm just a big continuity whore. ;-) I like knowing when stuff is set. But new Firefly is always a good thing. I noticed on the credit page it says "fourth in a series" in the bottom left hand corner. Hopefully that means we'll get more minis as time goes on.
